As the picture to the right shows, some household involvement is needed to keep the system going. The collected urine must be added to a first compost pile once a week, and the collected feces must be added to a second compost pile once every three weeks. However, no direct contact with these wastes is ever required, and the household members have no aversion to these practices since they are acting in accordance with the latest research findings and have used this system with no health problems for the past 3-1/2 years.
