Reed et al., Figures 2a and 2b: Traditional cloth filtration of drinking water in Rajasthan


In Figure 2a, water collected in a brass pitcher is being poured into a cloth-covered earthenware pitcher ("matka") to enable it to be cooled before drinking. The cloth filtration procedure will remove zooplankton and larger particulates.

In Figure 2b, the mouth of the brass pitcher used to collect the water is covered with a cloth through which the use will drink, to reduce its turbidity.
