Soils information or teaching aids on CD-ROM, video, or other audio-visual formats is difficult to locate. Here is a guide to materials we found. We were able to preview only a few of these.

  • Moving Toward Sustainability: Soil Management - 27 minute video by Iowa State University Extension illustrates farm management practices that can improve sustainability

  • Soil: A Natural Habitat - 17 minute video, discusses chemical and mineral components of soil and how to make soil healthier. Produced by Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc.
  • Soil: From the Beginning - 11 minute video, discusses the origins of soil, its composition, and its importance to all living things. Available from AGC Educational Media
  • Soil: Preserving a Natural Resource, 13 minute video, illustrates dangers to soil by chemicals, rubbish, acid rain, and erosion. Produced by Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc.
  • Soil Testing for Nitrogen: Taking the Guesswork Out of Farming - 16 minute video, by Iowa State University Extension Video Department
  • Soil, Who Needs It? - 14 minutes, is a good video for children between the ages of 5 and 10. In language and images they will understand, it shows the complexity and fragility of soil, and it illustrates what can be done to conserve the soil. And Soils of the Desert Project: A Video Presentation Offslide Set III - 34 minute, video illustrates some of the findings of the southern New Mexico Soil-Geomorphology Project. Both by the Department of Agricultural Communications of New Mexico State University (At the bottom of that page there's a search box for videos. Search on soil in the title and you will get several items, these two among them.)
  • Using a Cherokee County Soil Survey - 18 minute video by Kansas State University
  • Vegetation and Soil - 15 minute video explains the close relationships between climate, soil, vegetation and humans, using North American regions for examples. Available from AGC Educational Media

Distributors of Educational Videos and CD-ROMs

  • AGC Educational Media, formerly Altschul Group Corporation, provides an extensive list of educational videos, several of interest to soil scientists. The home page offers a link from the TV image for "Educational Videos" to a search page which allows searching by keyword. A link to the search page is also under the large graphic at "edu videos."
  • Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc. has produced a few videos on soils for students between the ages of 12 and 18. For more information, contact:
