Publishers of Soil Information

A book distributor that does a good job of handling books in Israel and a list of the major publishers of soils information. Several publish journals as well as books. Some provide search engines to allow you to search for publications by subject. Others provide hierarchical menus; "soil" is most often found under "agriculture," "environment," or "earth sciences."

Books about soils are published in Israel by universities, and by governmental, scholarly, and professional organizations. Books International is a book seller which provides a great service by identifying and making these books available for purchase. Publishers of Books or Journals

  • A.A.Balkema - A.A.Balkema, which is based in the Netherlands, publishes a wide variety of books, including many which are translations of books orginally published in other languages. Particularly good source for engineering books relating to soils, which are under the section heading "Soil & granular mechanics/Landslides/Foundation engineering". Other relevant section headings for soils are "Geology/Geochemistry" and "Agriculture/Aquaculture/Soil science."

  • Academic Press - AP Catalog allows searching for books, each title links to purchasing information, a description and the table of contents. "IDEAL" searches nearly 250 Academic Press journal titles, retrieving abstracts and full-text. Articles on soils appear in quite a range of AP journals. Two of particular relevance to researchers of soils in arid regions are Journal of Arid Environments and Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research.

  • American Chemical Society - The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) provides organized access to its journals, books, and CD-ROMs. There are links to pages for each ACS journal title, which includes a table of contents for recent issues. Most soil related articles were found in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, but visitors to the site will find it easy to explore other titles which may be relevant to their interests.

  • Annual Reviews, Inc. - Annual Reviews, a non-profit scientific publisher, publishes 27 series in biological and medical sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences. Two titles which feature articles particularly relevant to soil scientists are Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Annual Review of Energy and the Environment, but articles appear in other series also. When exploring this site, visitors should use the search capability to identify all relevant chapters from all series.

  • Blackwell Science, LTD - Blackwell Science provides search access to parts of its web site covering publications. Searching Books and CD-ROMs gives a list of titles relevant to your search topic; each title links to purchasing information, description, and table of contents. Searching Journal Keywords retrieves Blackwell Science journal titles with a paragraph description and access to the table of contents for recent issues. e.g. European Journal of Soil Science. Searching TOC Keywords retrieves a list of articles from the table of contents sections of the Blackwell Science Journal pages.

  • CAB INTERNATIONAL - CAB INTERNATIONAL (CABI) publishes books and journals about soils and related topics. CABI also produces the CAB ABSTRACTS database and CD-ROM subsets of the database, including SOILCD.

  • CRC Press - CRC Press provides an online catalog for searching CRC publications. Searching for a keyword in titles provides a list of titles, each linking to further information, including table of contents.

  • CSIRO Publishing - Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is not only a research organization, but it is Australia's major science publisher of books, journals, videos, software, and CD-ROMs. Of the many journal titles CSIRO publishes, the Australian Journal of Soil Research is of particular relevance to soils scientists concerned with arid regions.

  • Elsevier Science - Elsevier provides a search capability that allows you to choose to search book and journal titles or by choosing "advanced search" and then selecting "contents search," you can search for words in the titles and abstracts of journal articles. Or you can narrow the search by type of publication or by broad subject area. Since Elsevier publishes so many important titles in soil science, it is best to visit the site and conduct searches on your topic. Some of the Elsevier journals of interest to soil scientists are, Applied Soil Ecology, CATENA, Geoderma, Soil Biology & Biochemistry, Soil & Tillage Research. Elsevier also has published a wall chart, Soils of the World, which presents detailed information and color photographs of 106 soil profiles.

  • John Wiley & Sons, Inc. - Wiley's site offers not only the capability to search its catalog of book and journal titles, but by selecting the option to search the web site, you will gain access to the full text of textbook chapters. (Example: Chapter 19, Soil Systems, Strahler & Strahler Physical Geography Student's Companion). Wiley publishes not only scholarly works, but also good science books for children.

  • Kluwer Academic Publishers - Kluwer is a scholarly publisher covering a broad range of sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The web site provides online sample issues of many of its journal titles and tables of contents for all of them. Kluwer provides a good search capability for searching all publications, or for limiting the search to a type of publication: books, journals, or book series.

  • Marcel Dekker, Inc. - The Marcel Dekker site provides a helpful menu for searching their catalog of books, journals, encyclopedias and textbooks. At the bottom of the the search page is an option to search the abstracts for a limited number of Dekker journals.

  • National Academy of Science - searchable full-text is available for The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Online

  • Soil and Water Conservation Society - The Soil and Water Conservation Society is an non-profit association, which includes among its many activities, publishing the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation.

  • Soil Science Society of America - Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) publishes the journals Soil Science Society of America Journal and Soil Survey Horizons. It also publishes books and audiovisual materials.

  • Springer-Verlag - Springer-Verlag publishes scholarly books and journals. The journals of particular interest to soil scientists are Biology and Fertility of Soils and Irrigation Science. Connecting to these gives you the option of selecting "Contents," which takes you to a list of issues. Each entry links to the table of contents for that issue; each article listed links to its abstract.

  • Taylor & Francis - Taylor & Francis publishes books and journals. This web site allows searching both books and journals at the same time. Journals of interest to soil scientists are Arid Soil Research and Rehabilitation and Geomicrobiology Journal.

  • United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization - FAO allows searching by broad category; publications on soils are included in section titled "Land and Water Development." FAO also has produced a CD-ROM, Digital soil map of the world and derived soil properties.
