Diseases of carrot ( Daucus carota ) in Arizona

Powdery mildew

Powdery mildew of carrot is caused by Oidium (sexual stage Erysiphe) umbellifereae, the powdery mildew specific to the umbel family. The typical white powdery covering develops on leaves and stems (photo 1). The disease does not affect the roots except as it causes a reduction of growth of the leaves and stems.  Mild or late infections do not seem to reduce yields. Control measures are usually not necessary, but in areas where disease has occurred previously, preventive application of a wettable sulfur (Microthiol Disperss) may be warranted.
