watermelon squash leaf curl virus
Squash leaf curl is transmitted persistently by both biotypes of the sweet potato whitefly, Bemesia tabaci. It has been a problem in Arizona in fall watermelons in the central part of the state. Infection of young plants causes severe curling, and small leaves that are mottled and yellowing. Often an entire field may be affected, but young plants have been seen to grow out of the disease. It occurs primarily in squash and watermelon. No resistant varieties are known, but a host free period with sanitation and weed control may reduce subsequent infections.
