Abstract
Control of Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metal Plumes using Permeable Reactive Barriers in Antarctica – Development of Ion Exchange Theory
The seminar describes work that is being undertaken on a trial permeable reactive barrier to stop the migration of a hydrocarbon spill to the marine environment at Casey Station in Antarctica. One of the challenges of the application of the permeable reactive barrier to this environment was understanding the ability of the barrier to absorb hydrocarbons as well as to deliver appropriate nutrients to the environment to enhance biodegradation. The experience of the three year trial on the 6,000 litre spill will be described within the seminar and the development of ion exchange theory to look at temperature dependence in multi-component systems is also described.
