ENDOWED FACULTY POSITIONS
The University of Arizona currently has approximately 40
endowed faculty positions for eminent scholars, including chairs, visiting
professorships, distinguished professorships and lectureships.
Endowed
Chairs
A named, endowed chair is one of the most prestigious honors available
-- both to the supporters that create it, and the faculty member ultimately
chosen to fill the position. It is a significant tribute for the chosen
academician. Only the most outstanding scholars, at the height of their
careers, are considered for endowed chairs. The presence of such renowned
scholars attracts other prominent faculty members and students, and
leads to research, public service and academic programs of the highest
quality.
The minimum amount to establish an endowed chair is $1 million. This
may pay a portion of the chairholder's salary, research, equipment and
publications expenses; fellowships and assistantships. As this amount
was established more than two decades ago, $1.5 million is currently
recommended to endow a chair.
Endowed
Visiting Professorships
Endowments of this kind speed development of a full program of rotating
appointments for distinguished scholars, professionals, and artists
from throughout the nation and the world. The professors are invited
for varying periods of time to share their work with students, faculty
members, and the community. The endowment of visiting professorships,
given the University's international reputation and Tucson's attractiveness,
result in real enrichment of the overall cultural and intellectual life
of The University and the community.
The minimum amount to establish an endowed visiting professorship is
$750,000. This amount serves as a salary supplement to draw distinguished
visiting faculty in a particular field for one or more semesters. No
visiting professorships existed in the College of Agriculture and Life
Sciences as of 2003.
Endowed
Distinguished Professorship
An endowed distinguished professorship provides supplementary salary
or program support for a faculty member. It may also provide research
funding or cover other expenses related to the professorship. The minimum
level of support needed to establish a distinguished professorship is
$500,000.
Approximately fifteen distinguished professorships existed at The University
of Arizona at the end of 2000,
including those at the Eller College of Business and Public Administration,
Rogers College of Law, College of Medicine, College of Science and in
the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS).
Distinguished
Fellowships
An endowed distinguished fellowship provides one or more fellowships
or funding to support graduate students, fellowship equipment, space
or other related requirements. The minimum amount to establish an endowed
distinguished fellowship is $300,000.
Several endowed distinguished fellowships had been established at The
University by the year 2000, two in the College of Agriculture and Life
Sciences.
Endowed
Lectureships
Endowed lectureships provide a stable source of funding to bring leading
researchers and academicians to The University of Arizona for scholarly
lectures. Funding is at the $100,000
level.
UA Colleges with endowed lectureships include the Business and Public
Administration, Law, Medicine; Social and Behavioral Sciences, Architecture;
and Agriculture and Life Sciences.
