COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND LIFE SCIENCES
RESEARCH CAREER DEVELOPMENT AWARD
NOMINATION GUIDELINES
WHAT IS THE AWARD?
Established as part of CALS Millennium Oversight Committee's effort,
the Research Career Development Award was created to provide special
support for research by faculty who have assumed an unusually
heavy teaching, advising, extension and/or service load in response
to unit needs during the past two to three years. An award of approximately
$5000 (a combination of discretionary funds and/or other departmental
in-kind) may be given to one or two faculty in the College of Agriculture
and Life Sciences (CALS) annually. Discretionary funds are to be used
toward research activities (e.g. data collection, research assistantships,
research travel, publication costs, computers, or other discretionary
purchases related to research).
CALS will provide discretionary funds of up to $3000, which must be
matched by the nominating unit at a minimum of $2000. The unit's match
can be of various types, including but not limited to discretionary
funds, part of a course release, part-time help from existing staff,
additional graduate student support, a temporary shift of appointment
(from teaching or administration to research, etc.).
WHO CAN BE NOMINATED?
Any CALS faculty member with tenure/tenure-eligible or continuing/continuing-eligible
status can be nominated. Unit heads are encouraged to pay particular
attention to women and minority faculty as potential nominees, based
on studies that suggest they often carry a heavier load in teaching,
advising, and service that may cut into their research time. Prior recipients
cannot be nominated again until a minimum of five years has elapsed.
WHO CAN NOMINATE?
Unit heads may nominate one faculty member per unit each year.
NOMINATING PROCEDURE
The unit head must submit a packet containing the following:
- A one-page nomination statement from the unit head that addresses
these key points:
- the nominee's teaching, advising and/or service load during the
past two to three years
- how the unit will provide its matching funds.
- Nominee's current curriculum vita.
- An abstract (300 words maximum) from the nominee describing how
the funds will be used to assist his or her research goals.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
A committee comprised of a minimum of two faculty and one appointed personnel member plus the associate dean for research serving as chair will review all nominations and make their selection based on the attached criteria.
HOW TO SUBMIT NOMINATIONS
Nominations should be submitted to the Dean's Office, P.O. Box 210036, Forbes 306. The
