Celebrated Arizona State Parks
The year 2004 marked the diamond, or 75th, anniversary for Boyce Thompson
Arboretum, an unforgettable garden collection that is among the crown jewels
of the Arizona State Parks system. This year we have another milestone to
celebrate: the 50-year commemoration of Arizona State Parks. Have you walked
beneath the awesome travertine arch at Tonto Natural Bridge near Payson, or
photographed one of the magnificent sunsets over the Southern borderland oasis
that is Patagonia Lake? Have your children splashed in the pools at Slide
Rock State Park near Sedona on a Summer day, or marveled at the giant ponderosa
pine logs from which Riordan Mansion was built?
Tempe painter Cindy Carrillo has visited and painted in many of the State
Parks, capturing scenes in oil. During November, 2006, she exhibited more
than a dozen oil paintings of scenes from across the Grand Canyon State. .
Mrs. Carrillo was born and raised in the copper
mining town of Superior and recalls family picnics exploring nearby Queen
Creek Canyon and Boyce Thompson Arboretum. She was raised with a love for
the Saguaro cacti, rocks, animals and birds of our Sonoran desert. She earned
a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arizona State University in 1977, and her recent
work is most often completed outdoors in the al fresco “plein air”
style.
“When I am working outside I try to get my first impression down on canvas
before the snow, dust, or bugs get into the wet paint. Some I finish on the
spot, others are used as starting pieces for larger works. Working from life
is the tried-and-true way to get the colors, and feel of the landscape. The
weather has to be really bad for me to paint in the studio, nothing compares
to painting right in front of my subject,” said Carrillo.
Mrs. Carrillo studied printmaking and oil painting
with Darlene Swaim at Mesa Community College. Advanced instruction came at
the Scottsdale Artists School studying with Susan Diehl, John Burton, and
Gabor Svarick. While comfortable in watercolor and pastels, oil is her preferred
medium. She’s a member of the Oil Painters of America and Tucson
Plein Air Painters, and has exhibited her work in the Scottsdale Artist
School Best and Brightest two years in a row. She has received a scholarship
of merit from the Scottsdale Artist School and been invited to participate
in the Nomadas Del Arte Plein Air event in Santa Fe by the Sage Gallery. Her
artwork can be found at the Lundeen Inn of the Arts in Las Cruces, NM.
Visitors had a chance to see the artist in action here Saturday, December
2, during a special "Paint-Out" celebration. Pumpkin-orange and
vivid red leaves of Autumn color were just past their peak, and more than
a dozen artists from Tucson, Phoenix and as far as Cottonwood, AZ gathered
to capture Fall scenes on canvas.
The artist has two grown sons and shares her home with Andy, her husband of
29 years, and Veronica her daughter. “The support I receive from my family
is a blessing and shapes who I am as an artist. Painting is a struggle and
a joy, so I know I will be a lifetime student of the arts,” said Carrillo.
Boyce Thompson Arboretum is located at Highway
60 milepost #223, just three miles west of the town of Superior - a drive
of about one hour east of Phoenix or two hours from Tucson ( take Oracle Road
north to highway 79 past Florence to Highway 60, then east another 12 miles).
Monthly exhibits may be seen at our Visitors Center gallery daily from 8:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Summer hours 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). The Arboretum is
an Arizona State Park and daily admission must be paid to enter the Visitor
Center where the gallery is found. Admission is $7.50 for adults and $3 for
ages 5-12. Annual memberships at the Arboretum begin at $45, and include a
year's access, guest passes for your friends and family, along with many other
benefits. A membership may be purchased in the gift shop on the day of your
visit.

"Members of the Tucson Plein-Air
Painters are working with Mary Alice Daenzer from Arizona State Parks to arrange
paint-outs at various State Parks starting this Fall and lasting all the way
through 2007 -- we want painters, art collectors and the visiting public to
all come and see anew the beauty of our State Parks and the importance of
supporting them," said Carrillo.
