Spam Filters in Outlook

To filter out spam:

Open Outlook and click on the 'Tools' menu. Choose 'Message Rules' and select 'Mail'. Click 'New' to make a new rule. Next, set up your new rule:

  1. Choose 'Conditions' for your rule that will distinguish this piece of spam (and similar pieces of spam) from legitimate email. Keep your conditions simple. Overly complex conditions will allow more spam to slip through.
  2. Set the Action for your rule to 'Delete it'.
  3. In 'Rule Description' you'll flesh out the rule by specifying the words or email addresses you wish to filter out.
  4. Note: It's a good idea to keep your distinguishing word/phrase simple so that you can catch similar spam with the same rule.

To block messages from a sender or domain:

You can also block messages from a particular sender or domain. The domain is the name following the @ symbol in an e-mail address.

When you block a sender or domain, no e-mail or news message from that sender or domain will arrive in your Inbox or in the news messages you read. E-mail from blocked senders goes directly into your Delete folder. Newsgroup messages from blocked senders are not displayed.

From your e-mail Inbox or the list of messages in a newsgroup, select a message from a sender you want to block.

On the Message menu, click Block Sender.

To remove a name from the Blocked Senders list, click the Tools menu, point to Message Rules, and then click Blocked Senders List.

NOTES:

Filtration rules and blocking senders in Outlook will only apply to email that you download with Outlook. If you occasionally use Pine or Eudora, you may wish to make filters in those programs as well.
