Spam Filters in Pine

To create filters in Pine, begin at the Main Menu. Then type:

  • s for setup
  • r for rules
  • f for filters
  • a to add a filter

For the Nickname field, enter a discriptive name for this filter, such as 'debt' or 'bamboo furniture'. Move up and down with your arrow keys until you have highlighted the field that can distinguish this piece of spam from legitimate email. This is usually the From pattern or the Subject pattern. Hit 'A' to add a value or 'C' to change the value. When you've entered a value that matches your spam (like 'From pattern = spammaker@hotmail.com' or 'Subject pattern = DEBT'), you're ready to specify your filter action.

Move down to "Filter Action =" and change the value to 'Delete'. (You can do that by typing a * when 'Delete is highlighted.) Then hit E (for exit setup), and hit Y to committ your changes. You'll then see a list of your filters, and you can edit one by highlighting it and pressing Enter.
