Some Help With Headers

These instructions will help you with the short process of properly reporting spam received at an Ag email account to spam@Cals.Arizona.Edu with the full headers of the original spam email you received. This can also be used any other time you need to find the full headers for an email. We give instuctions for both Pine and Eudora Email programs.

What are headers?

If your email program is not listed below please Click here for instructions to several different mail clients

Pine

  1. First, assuming you are have already opened Pine, you will need to highlight the "SETUP" option in the main menu. Next you need to choose "CONFIGURE" at the setup prompt by striking the "c" key.

  2. Now you will see a screen that has a series of configuration options -- you need to find "enable-full-header-cmd" and highlight it, then put an "X" in it's box by striking the "x" key:

  3. When you go to send the spam, you will need to press the "h" key, as this will actually show the full headers of the message, then send it to spam@Cals.Arizona.Edu

Using Eudora and Microsoft Outlook

When you are using Eudora and Outlook, there is no setup involved like in Pine, it's a bit easier:

  • Using Eudora

  1. When using Eudora, you must press the "BlahBlahBlah" button which will be located at the top of your e-mail.
  2. Once you have done this, forward the message to spam@Cals.Arizona.Edu.
  • Using Outlook 2003

1. Open outlook and double click the message you want to get full headers for:

2. Once the message is open click on View at the top and then Options to bring up the headers:

3. Highlight the internet headers at the bottom of the page and right click, then left click copy.

4. Finally go back to your original message and click Forward at the top, paste the headers into the body of the message (ctrl+v) or right click and paste

5. Make sure to address either spam@ag.arizona.edu | spam@cals.arizona.edu click Send to finish.

  • Using Outlook express 2000

  1. While Outlook Express 2000 is open, right-click on the spam message you want the headers for, and click on Options like so:

  2. Now highlight the header text in the "Internet Header" section of the window, and right click on it; this will produce a small menu, then click on the Copy option:

  3. Next, go back to Outlook and with the spam message still highlighted, click the Forward button. This will open another window with the message ready to be sent. Put the cursor in the body of the message and paste the text you just copied into the message; it should look similar to this:

  4. The message should be sent to spam@Cals.Arizona.Edu.
