Instructions for FTP
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This page contains instructions on how to use the FTP program
on Windows and UNIX. Both Operating Systems come with a default
FTP program, however there is a better program written for
Windows that has a graphical interface called WS_FTP - this
will be the program we will be focusing on.
-Windows-
First you will want to get the FTP software from either
our ftp site or any other place you feel comfortable downloading
from. Here are some links:
Our Site
www.Download.com
After you have installed the software, you can start FTP'ing
right away; when you start the program, you should see a
window like this:

In order to connect to the system you want to put, or get
your files from, you will want to create a profile - so for
example if you want to connect to Ag, use these steps:
1. In "Profile Name:",
type `Ag'.
2. In "Host Name/Address:" type `ag.arizona.edu'.
3. The next part - "Host Type:" can be left as
`Automatic Detect'.
4. Uncheck the box for "Anonymous" and in "User
ID:" type in your username on Ag and your password in
the "Password:" field.
5. The next 2 fields can also be left alone.
Now click the "Connect" button
at the bottom-left of the window, and you should see some
action, then something
like this:

You will see in the left window all files
on your local machine, and the right window all files in
your home directory,
in this case, on Ag. Use the arrows in the center to transfer
files back and forth from each machine. When you are finished
transferring files, ALWAYS click the "Close" button
at the bottom-right of the screen, as this is just good
practice.
Now you are Windows FTP Jedi!! Have fun.
