It's a desert out there
Fort Huachuca is at the northern end of the Huachuca Mountains in Southeastern Arizona. Elevations range from a little over 4000 feet to over 8000 feet. The area averages only 15 inches of rain annually with most of this rain falling during the summer "monsoon " season. Vegetation is typical of the southwestern high desert.A Commitment to Conservation
Because Fort Huachuca is located in such a biologically rich area and contains a number of rare and endangered species, the U.S. Army is commited to minimizing its impact on the habitat and species. As part of a Biological Opinion agreement between the U.S Army and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Fort Huachuca has pledged to reduce water use to a sustainable level, necessitating a 1 billion gallon reduction in water use annually on the fort. Through innovative and wide ranging water conservation measures, Fort Huachuca is well on its way to meeting these goals.What We Do
The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension’s Water Wise and Energy Smart Program (WWES) works under contract with Fort Huachuca’s Directorate of Public Works’ Environmental and Natural Resources Division. This program provides public outreach, education, and services on water and energy conservation to military personnel and their families and all others who work on post. Informational briefings, presentations, displays, educational classes, and facility audits are available free of charge to:
- Troop units
- Government and contract organizations
- Fort Huachuca Accommodation Schools
- Fort Huachuca after school programs
- Fort Huachuca community clubs and organizations
- Youth organizations such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and 4-H on Fort Huachuca
The objective of WWES is to increase individual awareness of and active participation in water and energy conservation efforts on Fort Huachuca.
