WWES Fall 2006 Highlights
Project WET Teacher Workshop

Southern
Arizona teachers participated in a Project WET workshop at
the University
of Arizona
South Campus in September 2006. They enjoyed
experimenting with the
Rolling River, a five by ten foot
utility trailer filled with
artificial “sand.” They scooped out meandering rivers and then added small
houses, vehicles, animals, trees, foliage, and rocks to the
"landscape." Water
was turned on at the top of the
watershed and participants watched as it flowed
through the channels,
demonstrating
various effects of water, including erosion
and
flooding. During the workshop, the teachers participated in a number
of hands-on
activities and discussions about ways to save water and
protect the environment.
If you would like to learn more about future Project WET workshops or would like
to
schedule
the Rolling River for an organization or school on Post, please contact
WWES!
4th Grade Water
Festival

Over
500 Students
from all Sierra Vista Public Schools, General Myer Elementary
School on
Fort Huachuca, and Chancellor Charter School participated in the third
annual water
festival, sponsored by the
the Cochise County Cooperative Extension
and Arizona Project WET, held in Veterans Memorial Park in October 2006. Students
took part in three hands-on activities: "The Incredible
Journey," a demonstration
of the water cycle; "Get the Groundwater
Picture," a demonstration of groundwater;
and
"The
Water Conservation Relay," a demonstration of water use in the past,
emphasizing
the need to conserve water today. If you would like information on
becoming
a volunteer for the next water festival, please contact WWES.
Sierra
Vista Christmas Parade

Water
Wise staff and "Wettie the Water Drop" participated in the
2006 Sierra Vista
Christmas Parade, supporting the theme, "A Cartoon
Christmas." This was an opportunity
to share the message
to save water and energy with a wide audience.
