Tuesday Morning Notes

October 26, 1999

Last week, CEDs and staff met in Tucson for two days of professional development opportunities.  Staff evaluations rank the sessions very high. Awards for Staff Persons of the Year were given to Sandra Saad, 4-H (1998), and Steven Crofts, Extension Administration (1999).  Congratulations to both!  Six action items resulted from the CED meeting: 1) Explore attending the statewide county supervisor conference with chairs of all County Advisory Boards; 2) Develop a consistent volunteer policy that would apply to all program areas; 3) Develop resource material and contacts for
strategic planning in counties; 4) Develop a plan for grant support/advice; 5) Enhance statewide marketing, and 6) Develop APROL (Annual Performance Reports On Line) for use by paraprofessionals.

*  Congratulations to Sharon Hoelscher Day who received funding for her competitive food safety and quality special project from CSREES "Safe Food 2000-Food Safety and Quality" and to Ralph Meer, Nutritional Sciences, who received funding for "HACCP for Small and Very Small Meat and Poultry Processors in Arizona".

*  Maricopa Agricultural Center (big MAC) and its Farm Filled Ag-Venture educational series has received a top recognition award for its Ag Literacy Education Outreach Program at the recently held 1999 National Unity In Agriculture Conference held in Lubbock, Texas.  Sponsored by Texas Tech University, educators and agricultural supporters from around the country were in attendance. For more information, contact Victor Jimenez (520/568-2273) to involve individuals from your community in these MAC educational opportunities.

* Mike Ottman (Plant Sciences) was recognized at the Ag. 100 meeting in Tucson last Friday as the “1999 Faculty Member of the Year.”  The award, plus $1500, was originally given while he was on sabbatic in England so he was officially recognized Friday.  (Congratulations Mike!)  Dr. Matt Holt, the first occupant of the Cardon Chair was also present.  Matt begins a new era of emphasis on Agri-business and officially began his career with the UofA on October 1, 1999.

* Dean’s Fall Meeting is Thursday, October 28, 1999 in the Arizona Ballroom.  Beginning at 8:30 AM with breakfast, the Dean will give his “State of the College” address, there will be several awards given and then a “Special Surprise Program”.

* Mr. Conner Byestewa, Agricultural Leader and Extension Friend passed away
suddenly last Friday, October 22, 1999.  He served as an active member of the La Paz County Cooperative Extension Board since the county was established.  He was a strong supporter of 4-H and a UofA alumni.  He was considered “Mr. Agriculture”, served on Arizona Cotton Council, EPA regional committees and was called on by many Native American tribes and organizations for his expertise.  Conner was Extensionist of the Year in Arizona, 1997.  We will miss his dedication, good work and humor.

*  The Second Annual Southwest Vegetation Management Association Conference
will be held in Prescott, November 3-5, 1999.  Arizona Cooperative Extension has been a prominent player in this organization with one of the officers and one of the Board of Directors being from Cooperative Extension.  Jeff Schalau is the chair of the field trip.  This should be an outstanding conference and will offer CEU credits.  For registration information, please contact Jim Sprinkle at 520/474-4160.

* In response to surveys ECAT received this past summer, they have added some new non-web/non-Internet topics to the seminar series they offer. These classes are:  1) Design for the Non-Designer, Mon, Nov 8, 2-3, FCR 219.  Learn four basic design elements which can be used in PRINT publications to improve the appearance of the publication, and 2) Grappling with Grammar Glitches, Mon, Nov 15, 2-3:30, FCR 219.   Tackle grammar problems specific to a university setting, including what to capitalize, how to avoid passive voice, and common usage mistakes.  Please share this
notice with staff or faculty in your unit that might like to attend. Have them register by contacting Rob Luebke at rluebke@cals.arizona.edu or by filling out the form at:    http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/news/register.html
