Tuesday Morning NotesOctober 5, 1999* Join us in welcoming Dr. Ursula Schuch, who has formally accepted the offer to join our faculty, and conduct a research and extension program in ornamental horticulture. She will begin her appointment as an Associate Specialist (75% Extension and 25% Research) on February 1, 2000. Her office and laboratory space is located on the fourth floor of the Forbes building (Rooms 435, 435A, and 435B). Her husband, Dr. Dean Martens, is a soil and environmental scientist at the National Soil Tilth Laboratory in Ames, Iowa. He was able to arrange a transfer to the USDA facility (Arid Land Watershed Management Research Laboratory) located near the Campus Ag Center in Tucson. Ursula is currently teaching horticulture courses and doing research at Iowa State University. Prior to moving to Iowa State, she was an extension specialist in ornamental horticulture at the University of California, Riverside. Her current email address is ukschuch@iastate.edu. * Welcome to Catherine Twohig, a new Instructional Specialist in the Family & Consumer Sciences area. She will be working with Patty Merk and Juanita Waits on Money 2000. Family and Community Leadership, and other family programs. Most recently Cathy has worked at the University of Minnesota in doing the tech-prep evaluation for that state. * The Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior is holding the Fall Landscaping Festival & Plant Sale, October 15-31, 1999. They will be kicking off the first Saturday of the sale with a fullfledged landscaping festival featuring gardening demonstrations, talks, and tours with desert landscaping experts. Speakers on Saturday offer expertise on a variety of topics and include Cathy Cromell, an Instructional Specialist of the Maricopa Cooperative Extension and Chris Jones, Extension Agent in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Gila County Cooperative Extension, who will reveal the secrets of fall planting for trees and shrubs. Admission to the Arboretum is required to enter the sale. For more information, please call 520/689-2811. * A Public Forum/Natural Resource Town Hall will be held November 13, 1999 in PinetopLakeside, called "Living with our forest so our forest can live with us". The Forum will be presented by Navajo County Government, Eastern Counties Organization, The University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, The Sustainable Forest Partnership, and the Town of Pinetop Lakeside. The goal of the Forum is to educate the public and welcome everyone as necessary participants in the development of a coherent forestry program that is based on sound science and economics.
