Tuesday Morning Notes

November 23, 1999

Norm Oebker was honored at the 9th Annual Desert Vegetable Workshop in Yuma
on Thursday, November 18 for his 40 years of service to the vegetable industry. An engraved plaque with a hickory handle and a head of lettuce was presented to him.

*  Welcome Aboard to John (Jack) Kelly who will assume his duties as the Assistant Agent, Agriculture (Commercial Horticulture), in Pima County on January 3, 2000.  Jack received his Master’s Degree in Agricultural Technology and Management in 1996 from the UofA.  Many of you have met Jack as he has worked in Pima County on a part-time basis for the past 10 years.

*  Steve Etter and Gerald Moore made presentations at the Intertribal Agriculture Council meetings in Oklahoma City last week.  Over 200 tribal delegates and others from across the United States attended this national meeting.  Howard Jones and Woodie Winans were recognized for their longstanding leadership and dedication in working with U.S.D.A. and with the Intertribal Agriculture Council.  Matt Livingston received recognition for his outstanding Extension programs serving the Hopi people, Navajo County, Arizona.

*  John Palumbo, State IPM Coordinator, Bruce Tabashnik, Entomology Department Head, Rob Call, Cochise County Agriculture Agent and Deborah Young, Associate Director, Programs, reviewed proposals for IPM funding for FY99-00. A total of $113,000 was requested. The strategy this year was to fund as many projects as possible. Fourteen proposals were submitted; ten team proposals will be funded for a total of $53,000. Support for vegetable IPM team and advisory committee, Dave Byrne, $4,000;
Refinement of release techniques for whitefly parasitioids, Dave Byrne,
$3,000; Control of mosquitoes in the Tucson area, Henry Hagedorn, $6,000;
Measurement of deployment and population dynamic effects on pink bollworm
of Bt cotton in Arizona, Yves Carriere, $5,000; Public education in the
control of sweet resin bush and karoo bush, Kim McReynolds, $8,000;
Enhancement of the Arizona cotton information site, Peter Ellsworth,
$3,000; Cotton IPM/ICM team, Peter Ellsworth and Jeff Silvertooth, $5,000;
Evaluation of transgenic cotton varieties, Hal Moser, $4,000; IPM
enhancement for Arizona urban horticulture programs, Lucy Bradley, $7,200;
Colorado caddisfly project, Bob Smith, $8,000.

*  Provost Paul Sypherd announced Monday that he has decided to leave the
Provost’s job after this academic year, and return to a life of teaching.
That transition will be made sooner if a new Provost is ready to assume
these responsibilities before September 2000.  See the Arizona Daily

*  The Provost’s Author Support Fund deadline is November 30, 1999.  The
purpose of the Provost’s Author Support Fund is to help defray publication
charges to faculty members who have written book manuscripts or who have
produced other creative work which, if published, would likely bring
distinction to the author(s) and to the University.  The memo, as well as
the guidelines and suggested application format are available online at the
