Tuesday Morning Notes

June 29, 1999

On- and off-campus faculty came together yesterday and today to discuss strategic directions in the natural resource area.  This Renewable Natural Resource Planning Retreat generated considerable constructive dialogue among the 25 participants, representing 8 counties, 2 department heads (Dennis Cory and Roy Ax), and Pat Reid, Director of the School of Renewable Natural Resources.  A summary report will be forthcoming.

* The Arizona Agriculture Extension Association (AAEA) met last week in Safford, Arizona with a program focusing on Natural Resource issues.  I was impressed with the quality of the speakers and the candid discussion with presentations from BLM, Fish and Game, the Gila Monster Watershed Council, and Ranchers.  The Department of Biosystems Engineering were the best represented department with 5 faculty.  Overall a good meeting.  Thanks to Rob Call and Lee Clark for organizing the program.

*  Congratulations to the following projects and researchers who received Fiscal Year 1999-2000 funding from the Arizona Iceberg Lettuce Research Council:   Screening New Herbicides for Weed Control in Lettuce -- Kai Umeda and Barry Tickes; Evaluation of New Fungicides for Performance in Management of Lettuce Diseases in Arizona – Mike Matheron; Breeding High Quality Iceberg Lettuce Cultivars for Arizona – Edward Ryder; Insect Management for Desert Lettuce Production – John Palumbo; IPM Certification and Labeling of Arizona Vegetables – David Kerns, Robert MacArther and Ricardo Rivas; and Liaison with the University and Coordination of Information for AILRC – Norman Oebker.

* Paul Baker and George Frisvold have received a grant from the National Agricultural Pesticide Impact Assessment Program (NAPIAP) to study the use of insect growth regulators (IGRs) by Arizona cotton growers.  The study will combine data with economic, agronomic, entomological, and environmental data to examine what factors lead to IGR adoption and estimate how IGR adoption has affected overall pesticide use and grower costs.  Few studies to date have been capable of examining the economics of pesticide use in such detail. Congratulations!

*  Juanita O'Campo Waits, in collaboration with the Arizona Cactus-Pine Girl Scout Council, Inc., has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Office of Justice for Project JUMP, a mentoring program for at-risk youth and families.  In addition, continuation funding from the Arizona Supreme Court, the city of Chandler and the United Way, and a CDBG grant to support Project SOAR, a mentoring program.  Congratulations!

* Paul Baker, Susan Cordell, and Tim Crawford recently received project funding notification through ADEC (American Distance Education Consortium) for their Agricultural Telecommunications Program.  In collaboration with the University of Minnesota, Washington State University, and Virginia Tech University, this project will develop and pilot a model for a national pesticide application training (PAT) and education system.  This technology-enhanced model may be replicated in other national programs requiring certification.  The three basis national components to this grant proposal are Pesticide Applicator Training and Education Curriculum; System of Coordination and Facilitation; and Technology-Enhanced Learning Protocol.  Congratulations!

*  The winners of the AT&T Communication Awards for the Western Region have been announced.  Three entries from each category will be sent to the National Office to compete for the National Title.  From Arizona we have:  Lucy Bradley for Slide Set and Personal Column; Terry Mikel for Team Newsletter; and Tom DeGomez for Publication.  Congratulations to all of our winners.  National winners will be announced at the Omaha meeting.
