Tuesday Morning Notes

July 13, 1999

Congratulations to Dr. Peter Ellsworth. His research proposal, Ecologically Based IPM of Bemisia Tabaci in a Complex System: Seasonality and Low Temperature Dynamics, was recently funded for $228,000 from the Western Region Integrated Pest Management Special Grants Program.

*  The Southwest Horticulture magazine, representing the Arizona Nursery Association (ANA), wrote a “glowing” editorial in praise of Terry Mikel and his work for the industry.  The ANA nominated Terry for national recognition and were informed recently that Terry Mikel will be receiving the American Nursery and Landscape Association Nursery Extension Award in July.  Congratulations!

* Congratulations to Ina Holm, Administrative Assistant, Native American Programs, for receiving a UofA Bright Idea Award.  She was recognized with a $25 gift certificate for her suggestions that at least some of the Student Union dining facilities remain open during Commencement to accommodate parents and visitors to our campus.  The Student Union staff have implemented her suggestions.  The Bright Ideas program has been around for a number of years. For more information, please contact Elise Calmus, 621-1759.

*  Arizona 4-H Teen Congress proved to be a great success last week here on campus.  138 youth and 25 adults attended workshops, did community service, attended dances, listened to motivating guest speakers and made new friends. The community service activities were held at the Ronald McDonald House, Humane Society, a women and children’s shelter, the Campus Agricultural Center, Reid Park, Arizona Children’s Home, a local soup kitchen and the Tucson Community Food Bank.  Additionally, one group worked with the Graffiti Abatement program to paint over graffiti around town.  Some of the workshops dealt with leadership, the Internet, having your own business, the National Weather Service, horse hippology, becoming a UA Wildcat, tobacco prevention, consumer education, resume writing and job skills, True Colors, giving presentations and energizing teens for the new millennium.  Representative Jim Kolbe was the keynote speaker for the Recognitions Banquet, while Shirley O’Brien, Bill Peterson and Colin Kaltenbach all said a few supporting words of encouragement and appreciation.  The Scary Guy was the keynote speaker for our Western Theme Dinner and Dance and he spoke about eliminating prejudices in our society. This event was planned and run by the State 4-H Teen Council, led by Kim Gressley.  The event coordinator from the State 4-H Office was Allyson Baehr. Thanks to all who helped to make this 2nd annual event a success!

* Charles R. Poole, long-time La Paz County grower, was honored recently for his many contributions as Extension Board Chairman at a dinner hosted by Woodie and Janet Winans at their home in Parker, July 8, 1999.   He chaired the Advisory Board for 14 years, almost since La Paz County was established in 1983.   Charlie was recognized for his agricultural expertise as a garlic grower and proponent of developing regional value-added agribusiness... a garlic press.
