Tuesday Morning Notes

July 6, 1999

Accountability is increasingly important for Extension faculty to secure resources, maintain visibility and market our program effectiveness. Extension faculty involved in cotton production recently surveyed growers regarding the effectiveness and value of the Arizona Cotton Advisory Program (ACAP).  This program began in 1991 in response to grower requests for more timely and relevant crop management information.  Extension specialists and agents publish a one-page production advisory for cotton growers on a weekly basis during the growing season.  The results of this survey show strong grower support for ACAP.  It also provides valuable input on possible future improvements in the program. Commendation to Paul Brown and the "Cotton Team" for implementing this valuable survey.

* The following Focus Groups have been scheduled to discuss Annual Evaluations of Faculty:   Thursday, September 9 in Tucson, and Wednesday, September 22 in Phoenix.  Both sessions are scheduled from 10 AM - 2 PM with lunch included. More specific details will be sent in late August.

*  At the recent planning retreat for natural resources Extension programs, faculty developed criteria by which to prioritize statewide programs.  It was suggested that statewide programs include the following components:  (1) occurs in three or more counties; (2) a partnership between State Campus/County Personnel; (3) public involvement; (4) input by stakeholders; (5) clearly identified objectives, measurable outcomes and potential impacts; and (6) does not duplicate other educational programs that are available.  Your input is requested.  Please contact Deborah Young (djyoung@cals.arizona.edu) with your comments.

*  The Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, in conjunction with The University of Arizona Foundation, supports a Faculty Small Grants Program.  Awards of up to $5,000 are made on a competitive basis semi-annually for projects involving research or other creative scholarly activity.  This program is intended to provide short-term, one-time support that will “jump start” worthwhile projects and result in data or work products that can be used in developing major proposals for submission to extramural funding agencies or private contributors.  Employees holding faculty rank are eligible to apply with priority given to new junior faculty who are embarking on careers involving research or other creative scholarly activity.  Proposals are evaluated by a peer-review committee composed of colleagues from related disciplines.  Fall 1999 proposals are due at the Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, 601 Administration, by 5:00 P.M. on Monday, October 4, 1999.  For more detailed information about the Faculty Small Grants Programs, contact Mary Cox at 621-3513, or by e-mail: “marydcox@u.arizona.edu”.

* Cooperative Extension Programs now has a Homepage.  It will be in on-going construction of course, but add it to your bookmarks: <http://cals.arizona.edu/internal/programs/index.html>.  This is also an internal site so you will need to use the userid “coa” and password “ua”.  The Programs page contains links to funding procedures, recent/upcoming Programs-sponsored events, spotlights on various programs (changed bi-weekly), funded program proposals, enhancement awards, and reports from funded programs.  There is also a link to 4-H Youth Development county contracts, and “Words of Wisdom” from Deborah.  If you have something you would like us to add on to this page, please contact pattib@cals.arizona.edu.

REMINDER: - Tour of the NAU Onsite Wastewater Treatment Education Facility in Flagstaff, Friday, July 9, 11:00 A.M.  Contact Kitt Farrell-Poe (520/782-3836) for more information.
