Tuesday Morning Notes

August 10, 1999

Approximately 25 Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program leaders from the Western Region met in Tucson last week to discuss programs, projects, and funding sources.  Rick Gibson represented Arizona. My thanks to Rick and to Patti Baciewicz who coordinated local arrangements. The opportunity for faculty to get SARE funding or for farmers/ranchers to get farmer grants looks good.  Contact Rick Gibson for the funding guidelines, timeline, and examples.  Also check out the new Western Regional Web Site:  http://wsare.usu.edu

*  Congratulations to the Planning Team for the Southwest Low Desert Gardening and Landscaping Conference.  They have just been selected as a recipient of the International Master Gardener Search for Excellence Award.  Cheryl Czaplicki, past Chair of the team will be accepting the award and doing a presentation at the International MG Conference in San Antonio next month.  Our thanks to Lucy Bradley for her leadership.

* The following link is to the online version of the information on Criteria for Promotion and Tenure/Promotion and Continuing Status announced last week by the Dean’s office.  There is also a link from the faculty page of AgInfo (under Evaluations).  http://cals.arizona.edu/dean/ptcindex.html

*  You can track agricultural economics reports issues on the Economic Research Service Web Site at: http://www.econ.ag.gov/new-at-ers/.  Following are a few materials recently added to this service: Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Situation & Outlook Report; U.S. Agricultural Trade Update; Vegetables and Specialities Yearbook; and Agricultural Outlook, August issue, summary only.

*Congratulations to Patti Baciewicz as the winner of the 1999 Second Quarter IDEA Award. To cut down on some paperwork, it was suggested that Ag Admin accumulate any photocopy charges less than $5.00 and invoice COA departments every three to six months rather than every month for these small amounts. The quarterly IDEA award is for all employees and student majors in the College of Agriculture.  The award is recognized by a stipend of $100.00.  Please see the URL listed below for suggestion criteria and submittal form.  Please e-mail gjohnson@cals.arizona.edu or send your idea to Forbes 320. For more information go to http://cals.arizona.edu/aas/home/gordy1.htm

* The International Arid Lands Consortium (IALC) is currently funding FY 2000 Research & Development Projects and FY 2000 Demonstration Projects. It is anticipated that more than $700,000 will be available.  The deadline for receipt of all proposals is November 15, 1999.  Some examples of program areas that will have been previously funded include: a) Land Reclamation, b) Land Use, c) Water Resources Development, d) Water Resources Conservation, e) Water Quality, f) Inventory Technology, g) Ecosystem Processes Supporting Sustainable Management and h) Enhancements of Sustainable Management of Ecological Systems and their socioeconomic dimensions.  Faculty members may want to consider submitting a proposal. Contact Jim Chamie in Tucson (621-3024) for copies of the Request for Proposals & Guidelines, or to obtain more information.
