August 24, 1999

The first focus group meeting on county faculty peer evaluation will be held near The University of Arizona campus (location tba) on Thursday, September 9 from 10 A.M. - 2 P.M.  Lunch will be provided to those faculty who RSVP by Noon on Tuesday, September 7 to Jack Roberts (jroberts@cals.arizona.edu).  The morning session will be a discussion of ABOR rules, structural processes, and ways to improve evaluations.  The main question for the afternoon is “How can a peer group who has to evaluate others provide positive suggestions in a fair and constructive manner?  The second focus group will be held in Phoenix on Wednesday, September 22 from 10 A.M. - 2 P.M. at the Maricopa County Office. More details to follow.

*  Darcy Dixon led a discussion on Friday, August 20, with 20 other faculty from throughout the state about the implementation of a $250,000 grant from the Department of Economic Security (DES) for the life skills program for at-risk families.  Soyeon Shim participated offering help from the School of Family and Consumer Resources.  This is a good example of Extension working with State Government to deliver needed educational programs.

*  Lee Clark has tallied the votes for the Arizona Agriculture Extension Association (AAEA).  And the winners are....
Rob Call- President
Kim McReynolds- Vice-President
John Begeman- Secretary
Lee Clark- Treasurer
Congratulations to the Winners!

*  Congratulations to Shirley O'Brien, Deborah Young, Dean Fish and Marilynn Johnson who are the recipients of a one-year grant of $75,000 from CSREES for the "Border Families in Crisis: Nogales--Arizona/Sonora" project. The project will closely match the statewide Family Community Connection goals and use existing Extension-developed curriculum for the program delivery, but will target border families at risk.  Shirley O'Brien has been instrumental in developing and managing the grant application.

*  We are pleased to announce the arrival of the new Turfgrass Extension home page. This URL address covers many aspects of lawn maintenance and should help answer many of the lawn questions you receive in your county. The research section includes many reports of the applied research dealing with new grass varieties, pest control, and more specialized management practices.  The page was designed by David Jensen, and will be maintained by Plant Sciences. Fact sheet updates will be incorporated on an as needed/developed basis. The address is as follows: <http://www.cals.arizona.edu/turf>

*  Cotton Field Day at the Maricopa Agricultural Center will take place on Wednesday, October 6, 1999. As in years past, we are having a poster session outside on the west side of the Cardon building under a large tent. This poster session is an excellent opportunity for the University to showcase projects and programs relating to cotton production and agriculture in Arizona. If you would like to reserve a space, forms can be found at:   <http://cals.arizona.edu/aes/mac/Field_day_posters.html>. Just fill out the form and send it to Ed Martin at the Maricopa Ag Center at: Fax:(520) 568-2273; edmartin@cals.arizona.edu.

*  The Sabbatic Leave Conference Call is scheduled for Wednesday, September 1 at 1:00 p.m.  If you're interested in taking sabbatic leave in 2000, it's not too late to sign up for the call. Contact Steven Crofts, 621-7145 to sign up.
