Tuesday Morning Notes
September 14, 1999
About 40 people spent the weekend and early week focusing on Evaluation
of
Children, Youth and Family programs as part of a professional development
workshop in Family and Consumer Sciences. Most of the attendees
were from
Utah and Arizona, though representatives from California, Nevada, and
Colorado were present. A special thanks to Patty Merk, AEAFCS
President,
and to Marta Stuart, Carol Willis, Lynas Waun, and Juanita Waits for
putting together an excellent program.
* Donna Blevins, Administrative Assistant in Gila County, is retiring
effective October 1, 1999. With September 30 being her last day,
an
“Afternoon Dessert” is planned to allow anyone to come to the Cooperative
Extension office to wish her well. Donna plans to spend time
with her
children/grandchildren, do quilting and sewing, and gardening.
She has
worked for Cooperative Extension since August 1993, first in San Carlos,
then in Globe.

Citrus Newsletter.
* Phil Knight, Extension Advisory Board member from Yavapai County and
rancher, and Jim Sprinkle, Area Extension Agent, Animal Science, received
a
certificate of appreciation from the USDA-Forest Service for their
role in
helping to develop a conservation strategy for a threatened species.
Phil
Knight owns a ranch on which the Little Colorado Spinedace is present
and
has faced special challenges in running a viable cattle operation while
still meeting environmental concerns related to the Spinedace. Last
summer,
Phil Knight and Jim Sprinkle partnered with the USFS, the US Fish &
Wildlife Service, and Arizona Game & Fish in helping to write this
conservation strategy. The Strategy was developed over about a six
month
time period and utilized information from the scientific community
at NAU
and the USFS Rocky Mountain Experiment Station. Developing a
conservation
strategy for threatened or endangered species may be a means of reducing
conflict and developing possible solutions in recovery of the species
while
still allowing for multiple uses of public land.
* There will be a Fall Vegetable Workshop on September 24, 1999, 8 AM
-
Noon at the Yuma County office, 2200 W. 28th St. For further
