* Dine’ College administrators, faculty, and staff joined a dozen
colleagues from the University of Arizona yesterday and today in a workshop
on 1994 and 1862 Land Grant Colleges. Gerald Moore presented a program
about Extension on the Navajo Nation. Partnerships in academic, research,
and Extension programs, grants and directions were explored.
* The National Riparian Service Team came to Payson September
10 and 11th to present "Proper Functioning Condition and Grazing Management
for Riparian-Wetland Areas" to about sixty ranchers, agency personnel,
and environmentalists. This workshop was organized by Dr. Jim Sprinkle
in cooperation with several other organizations. According to Wayne Elmore,
NRST, "we have 2.5 million miles of streams in the United States not functioning
as they should". Workshop participants learned how to analyze various components
of riparian-wetland areas and rate them. Thanks to Jim Sprinkle,
Chris Jones, Jeff Schalau and Larry Howery for making this excellent workshop
possible.
* The Distributed Learning Team in the College, with funds from
the College Administration, is issuing a request for proposals. The purpose
of the program is to promote development of distributed learning projects,
defined as learning that can be accessed by an audience at any time. Examples
include teaching web sites (for credit or non-credit), interactive learning
modules, animations for use in teaching, teaching-related CD-ROMs, videos,
and other projects aimed at enhancing the college's distributed learning
capacity. Projects funded by the grants may add to an existing project
or may initiate a new project, but preference will be given to new projects
and to people who have had limited experience in developing distributed
learning projects. Proposals will be accepted from any COA faculty
or academic professional and are due November 1. Award announcements will
be made by December 1, and funds must be expended by June 30, 2000, although
the project can be completed any time in 2000. For further details see
the RFP at: http://cals.arizona.edu/distributed_learning/rfp.html.
RFP's have also been sent to each county director and each department head
by James Knight, chairman of the Distributed Learning Team.
* From the Office of the Administrator, Cooperative State Research,
Education, and Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington,
DC 20250. Charles W. Laughlin, Administrator (claughlin@reeusda.gov).
