Over 200 people attended the 12th Annual South West Indian Agricultural
Association (SWIAA) meeting in Parker, Arizona this past week. Don Slack, Ken
Foster, Stan Farlin, Gerald Moore, Matt Livingston, Martin Guerena, Prunell
Charley, Joanne Littlefield, along with recent retirees Lorraine Kingdon,
Howard Jones, Woodie Winans, Mike Rethwisch, provided a strong representation
from the College. My thanks to all who made the meeting a success. Joe
Graham, Academic Programs office, received a $1000 scholarship for his
graduate
education.
* Congratulations to Mari Wilhelm, Director of the ICYF, for receiving the
ICYF's first major gift (approx. $100,000) from Shamrock Foods Co. (Ms.
Frances
McClelland). With this gift, Mari is excited about being able to implement
several ICYF/FS's educational, research, and outreach plans/activities this
year.
* Please join me in welcoming Barron Orr, Extension Specialist, Office of
Arid
Lands Studies. He recently served as coordinator of a USAID-funded Public
Lands
Utilization Study in Malawi investigating the impacts on and demand for public
land from local communities and 60 stakeholder agencies to determine the
viability of community-based resource management. As Extension Specialist,
Barron will be serving as our new Geospatial Technology Specialist. You can

* Gary Woodard, Associate Director of the Water Resources Center and a member
of the SWES Department, has accepted an offer from the Hydrology Department.
He will be Assistant Director for Information Transfer and Public Outreach
with
the new Science and Technology Center. He has been a great asset to the
Center
and we wish him well in his new endeavor and want to thank him for the many
contributions he has made to the department of SWES and Cooperative Extension.
* Nationally known cowboy poet Baxter Black will perform in Tucson on Monday,
February 21 at a benefit dinner and concert. Proceeds will go to the
University of Arizona Livestock Judging Team. Dinner tickets are $100 which
includes preferred seating at the concert (partly tax deductible). Tickets
for
the concert are $20 per person and are not tax deductible. Call Beth

* Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal County Cooperative Extension offices are
sponsoring
an Ultra Narrow Row Cotton Symposium on Thursday, February 3, 2000, 9AM-12
