Many thanks to everyone who cooperated in making this year's Staff In-Service a great success! Congratulations to Debra Pearson, Administrative Associate, Yavapai County Cooperative Extension for receiving the 2000 Extension Staff Person of the Year Award. Her award was presented during the recent Cooperative Extension Staff In-Service held at the Holiday Inn on Palo Verde in Tucson. Debra has been with Yavapai County for 24 years and has been an exemplary employee, role model, and leader.

* Welcome to Eliza Malo, a new Instructional Specialist with Pima County Cooperative Extension. Eliza says her focus will be directed towards foods and crafts project development and workshop development. Welcome Aboard!

* The Character Counts! movement is in full force in Arizona. On Saturday, Oct 21st a special recognition ceremony was held that focused on Character Counts! at the State Fairgrounds. Tammy Linn, Special Assistant to the Governor for Character Counts!, presented a proclamation from Governor Hull proclaiming Oct 15-21, 2000 as Character Counts! Week in Arizona. Yuma County 4-H Ambassadors helped present proclamations from the cities of Yuma, Gilbert and Phoenix. 4-H is a major partner in character education throughout the state of Arizona.

* John Palumbo, State IPM Coordinator, Bruce Tabashnik, Entomology Department Head, Terry Mikel, Maricopa County Agriculture Agent, Martin Guerena, Colorado River Indian Tribes Agriculture Agent and Deborah Young reviewed the proposals for federal IPM funding on October 23. A total of $202,060 was requested. Seventeen proposals were submitted; ten team proposals will be funded for a total of $50,000. The project leader and amount funded are noted below.
Colorado River caddisfly abatement project - Bob Smith, $5,000 Control of mosquitoes in the Tucson area - Henry Hagedorn, $4,000 Cotton IPM/ICM team - Peter Ellsworth and Jeff Silvertooth, $5,000 Enhancing cotton IPM with kaolin particle film - Yong Biao Liu, $5,000 Evaluation of an optical chlorophyll detecting spray system for spot spraying weeds in Arizona tree crops - Bill McCloskey, $6,000 Insect identification and IPM recommendations - Dawn Gouge, $5,000 Insect pest survey for Arizona turfgrass - Kirk Smith, $5,000 Spatial analysis of Lygus population dynamics using ADA 1080 pesticide use reporting data with web-based public accessibility - Ken Agnew and Paul Baker, $7,000 Urban integrated pest management web site - Dawn Gouge, $5,000 Vegetable integrated pest management team and advisory committee support - David Byrne, $3,000
