Tuesday Morning Notes

October 31st, 2000

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Join us in welcoming Peder Cuneo who started a new position yesterday as the Extension Veterinary Specialist. He located at the Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Peder can be reached at 520/621-2356, or by e-mail at cuneo@u.arizona.edu. Welcome Aboard!

* Our thanks and best wishes go to Steve Etter, located in Shiprock, New Mexico, whose family has decided to relocate in Utah effective February 1, 2001. Steve has developed some outstanding programs in the four corners area, generating several grants which currently support five people in program activity. We will consider relocation of current faculty, if they are interested in assuming the position in the Shiprock area. Our lateral move policy (see policy and procedures manual online, Section 5.13) describes four conditions for consideration: 1) the move is rational in a programmatic sense, 2) the prospective host county indicates a desire for the individual to join the county faculty, 3) the individual desires the move, and 4) there will be no salary adjustment made as a result of the move, though consideration may be given to an allowance for moving expenses. Call me to discuss this opportunity. Written interest needs to be received in my office by November 15, 2000.

* Congratulations to Vickie Steinfelt (Yuma County) and Marilynn Johnson (Santa Cruz County) for their role in a $1.8 million grant on diabetes. Source of funds: Federal Appropriations administered by the Centers for Disease Control. The College of Public Health was the primary recipient of the grant and through the Community Health Advancement Partnerships (CHAPS), Yuma and Santa Cruz County Cooperative Extension received funds. Yuma County received $123,000 to promote physical activity as a prevention strategy to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and other chronic diseases in border communities. Santa Cruz County received CDC funding in the amount $63,384 to do coalition building and leadership training for the Promotoras and health educators dealing with diabetes and chronic diseases in along the border.
