In response to the recommendations from the Cooperative Extension Volunteer
Policy Committee, a training session on our revised Volunteer Policy will be
held on March 22nd (1-5 PM), at the beginning of the CED meeting. CEDs will be
charged with the responsibility to go back to their counties to share with
their county teams the information relating to volunteer policies. Knowing
that not all county directors may feel comfortable in training their
faculty and staff, CED's are certainly welcome to invite others who deal
directly with
volunteers from their counties to attend this half day training. However, ALL
costs for additional trainees will be at county expense. We do need to know
(ASAP) how many will be attending so please inform Jack Roberts (621-7209
or by e-mail: jroberts@cals.arizona.edu) if others will be attending from
your county.
* Join us in celebrating the diversity of food and fiber products grown in
Arizona during Arizona Agriculture Day, Wednesday, March 15, 2000 at the
Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza (across from the State Capitol). $1.00 lunch
(BBQ Beef or Pork Sandwich, Slaw, Beans, Boiled Egg, Fruit, Vegetables,
Milk) served from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Visit exhibits and a Petting Zoo,
watch a Produce Derby (fourth and fifth graders make racing vehicles from
vegetables), and cheer on your favorite Celebrity Cow Milking Contest (Jim
C.'s Team won last year). Festivities begin at 10:30 AM and end at
approximately 1:30 PM. For more information visit the website at:
http://www.agriculture.state.az.us/CDP/agday.htm, or contact Rochell Planty,
Arizona Agriculture Day Committee Chair, 602/258-8568.
* Effective April 1st, the phone number to the UA modems will change from the
current 621-9600 number to 618-3190. This will not effect the 800 number.
The new modem number will connect to the 56kbs modems and provide faster
access
for those with 56k modems (providing your phone lines can handle that
speed). Be sure to change your number on dial-up. You can start using
this number today as it is now active. After March 31st, you will not be
able to connect
with the 621-9600 number. Contact the Network Lab (lab@cals.arizona.edu) if
you have further questions.
* The Small Community Planning Assistance Collaborative Program, initiated by
Chris Jones, Gila County Cooperative Extension, held two-day workshops in
Coolidge and Camp Verde over the February 25-28 weekend. In Coolidge, Drachman
Institute's Dr. Barbara Becker and five graduate students facilitated the
comprehensive planning workshop. Dr. Maria Fernandez-Gimenez (SRNR)
provided resource support over the weekend for the Open Space element,
including making a detailed presentation on acquisition tools and
techniques. Over fifty
residents attended, including the mayor, several town council members, and
Pinal County Extension Director Rick Gibson. Twenty-two planning students
under the direction of Doctors Ruth Yabes and Joochul Kim from ASU's
College of Architecture and Environmental Designs facilitated the workshop
in Camp Verde. Yavapai County Extension Director Jeff Schalau was present
both days serving as a resource person. For both workshops, participants
overwhelmingly rated the workshops as highly productive on their evaluation
forms. Next on the calendar for this program is Snowflake on March 17.
Contact Chris for more info.
* Ruth Carter and two students from Miami High School attended the Partnership
for Health 2010 National Conference in Washington, DC. They presented an
interactive CD on the risks and consequences of teen sexual activity. The
idea for this CD started with a Gila County Coalition. Programming and
graphic
designs are the work of Jeremy Fergason and David Moss, high school seniors
who will be attending UofA next year. Their work, "Risky Business," received
special recognition from the podium. The CD will be available for purchase
soon. Congratulations Ruth!
* Mark your calendars and plan to attend Safe Food 2000, July 26-27, 2000 in
Phoenix. For more information on sponsoring and exhibiting, call
