Tuesday Morning Notes

April 25th, 2000

Please join me in congratulating Libby Davison for recognition received for her role in the Landscape Team that was selected in a campus-wide competition for the year 2000 University of Arizona Team Award of Excellence. The team consists of Libby Davison, Lecturer Plant Sciences; Margaret Livingston, Assistant Professor, Landscape Architecture; Chuck Raetzman, Assistant Director, Facilities Management, and students in their courses. The team received the award on April 19th at a recognition ceremony hosted by President Likins. For eight years this team has worked together to create numerous landscaping projects that have greatly enhanced the environment at the UA. Their most recent project is the lanscaping added to the north side of the Shantz building. Congratulations!

* John Hays, rancher from Yavapai County, was recently recognized by the Project CENTRL Executive Board with a luncheon and retirement gift in appreciation for many years of outstanding leadership and service. John has served as President of the CENTRL Executive Board since 1993 and recently retired as Director of the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures. He served in our State Legislature as a member of the House of Representatives from 1975-82 and as Senator from 1983-90 and became a highly visible leader in making the voice of rural Arizona heard. As Senator, John was very instrumental in the development of the strong partnership with Cooperative Extension and the Center for Rural Leadership. The CENTRL Executive Board provided a garden wagon full of tools and supplies to John Hays during the luncheon in appreciation of his long-standing leadership and support to Project CENTRL.

* The first meeting of Arizona Coordinated Resource Management Executive Group met April 18, 2000 in Phoenix. Nineteen agencies were involved. A copy of the list will be faxed to all CEDs for distribution within your offices. A document called the Southwest Strategy will be circulated soon. George Ruyle (SRNR) is providing leadership in this statewide effort with myself as point person. If you have any questions, give us a call.

* The 16th Annual Arizona Agribusiness Forum was a big success. The conference focused on Emerging Water Issues; Emerging Technologies; Emerging Agribusiness Supply and Customer Relationships; and Growing Smarter: Can It Be Done? The Lead-off Speaker was Matt Holt, Ag. Economics, with presentations by Gary Woodard and George Frisvold. My thanks to Moderators Russ Tronstad and Kai Umeda, and to Paul Wilson for his organizational efforts.

* 275 people attended the 11th Annual Native American Livestock Field Days at Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation in Scottsdale last Wednesday and Thursday. My special thanks to Stan Farlin, Jolie Ogg Graybill and Bryan Chadd, who along with Howard Jones, worked closely with the SWIAA Planning Committee. Even though Howard Jones has retired, he took the challenge and put in considerable time to make this year's program a great success. Roy Ax, Bob Katnig, Mark Enns, Dave Shafer, Peder Cuneo, Dick Rice, Clay Carlson, Bud Keister, and Prunell Charley made presentations. Jim Collins, Head of Veterinary Sciences participated, along with Steve Campbell, Navajo County office. Darlene Lyman, Andi Mason, Dottie Spear, and Paula Watson assisted with registration and logistics. A very good program!
