Congratulations to Sherry Betts, School of Family and Consumer Sciences, to Maricopa County: Juanita Waits, Catherine Twohig, and Stan Farlin for their program in Chandler at Frye School; Ruth Carter in Gila County for her program at the San Carlos Youth Wellness Center; Steve Campbell and Esther Hubbell in Navajo County for their program in Hardrock. Their application for a CYFAR State Strengthening Grants or New Communities Projects has been approved for funding in fiscal year 2000.

* Congratulations to Jack Roberts for winning the First Quarter COA Idea Award for his idea to make the back door to Forbes (by the elevator) handicap accessible.

* The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GPRG) Southern Arizona Conference was held on April 29, 2000. The coalition held a successful spring conference for GPRG at the Quincie Douglas Center in Tucson. The 100+ attendees included mostly grandparents, representatives from agencies providing assistance to grandparents, and those interested in this growing topic. Child care was provided for 30+ children who ranged in age from 3 to 12 years of age. The conference committee from the coalition included representation from grandparents raising their grandchildren, Cooperative Extension in Cochise, Graham, and Pima Counties; AARP both local and national, Pima Council on Aging, The Casey Family Programs, Successful Journeys, The Governor's Council on Aging Task Force on GPRG, Tucson Unified School District Family Resource and Wellness Centers, KidsCare, and A Mountain Community House. Participants at the conference had the opportunity to receive information regarding national grandparent issues and resources available. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the coalition can join us at our regular monthly meetings. The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Southern Arizona Coalition (GPRG SoAZ) meets on the the second Thursday of each month, from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m., at the Pima County Cooperative Extension office, 4210 N.
