Tuesday Morning Notes

June 27th, 2000

Join me in welcoming Brent Strickland, Assistant Agent, 4-H Youth Development to our La Paz County Cooperative Extension office. Brent began his new role on June 12, 2000 and is looking foward to the challenges and opportunities coming his way. Welcome Aboard Brent!

* Susan King joined our ranks on June 5, 2000 as an Assistant Agent, 4-H Youth Development in our Yuma County Cooperative Extension office. Susan brings a wealth of knowledge with her experience as a school teacher. Welcome Aboard Susan!

* The College of Agriculture has changed its name to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, effective June 7. The official acronym for the college is CALS. The change was made to more accurately reflect the interdisciplinary focus of the college, which includes teaching, research, and extension programs in not only the agricultural sciences, but also in renewable natural resources, and family and consumer sciences. CALS has more departments and faculty involved in life sciences research (involving plants, animals, and humans) than any other UA college except Medicine. The life science departments and schools within the college include agricultural and biosystems engineering; animal sciences; arid lands studies; entomology; family and consumer sciences; nutritional sciences; plant pathology; plant sciences, renewable natural resources; soil, water and environmental science; and veterinary science and microbiology.

* We will be receiving $175,000 (minus the University indirect) for the Department of Economic Security Character Education Contract curriculum this month, which will enable us to move forward. Each ^ÓTrain the Trainer^Ô workshop (we must hold a minimum of 10) will be billed to DES plus any programs delivered to TANF youth participants (age 4-19) or TANF eligible youth. If all goes as anticipated, there will be over $240,000 available after University indirect costs are subtracted.

* The University of Arizona and New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension will offer the 7th Annual Southwestern Noxious Weed Shortcourse to be held in Farmington, NM., July 18-20, 2000. The Shortcourse focuses on invasive plants in the rangeland environment and features well-known noxious weed experts as instructors.
