Tuesday Morning Notes

July 18th, 2000

Effective June 7, 2000, the official name of our College -- the first College at the University of Arizona, established in 1889 -- is the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Don't forget to correct any new publications and marketing materials to reflect our new name.

* Did you hear.... Aliens invaded?? Well, maybe not quite exactly... but this past week turned "green", but not with "little green men"... it was full of clovers as it was the state 4-H Teen Congress "Blasting into the New Millenium." The U of A Campus played host to 112 youth and adults from nearly every county in Arizona. Sandra Saad stepped forward in May with the resignation of Allyson Baehr and assumed a new role officially in June as event coordinator. She certainly hit the ground running with 4-H Teen Congress. Hats Off to Sandra for a superb job as well as to Kim Gressley, State 4-H Teen Advisor, Stephanie Sproul, Pinal County Extension, and those 22 youth serving as Teen Council Representatives! What a terrific week! The State 4-H Office conducted a spoof "Blasting into the New Millenium" with Captain Bill at the helm of the Starship 4-H Arizona. Speakers such as Leon Quan helped the youth "choose love" and inspired the youth to perform community service with at least 7 local agencies. Ryan Hanson , U of A Basketball Program Director, took the youth through the triple threat play of squaring up their goals, not passing on opportunities, and driving for success, while Marshall Trimble, state historian, performed cowboy folklore for the youth and adults at the recognition banquet. Donors, sponsors, and youth recipients of scholarships and Nat'l 4-H Congress delegates were honored. Kudos were given as numerous faculty presented workshops from "frankenfoods", clowning around, taking a public adventure, learning about careers in veterinary medicine, nutritional science, and even "so you want to be a wildcat"... Yep, the week was fun-filled with a barbeque sponsored by Foundation trustee Doug Mellon of Mellon Farms, Inc. and other sponsors included: Farm Credit Services. Oh and who could forget a "dance a night'!! So, with a taste of campus life, we're sure that these youth will "launch" home only to orbit back again in '01!
