Tuesday Morning Notes

August 1st, 2000

The Western Region Mid-Managers held a successful conference at Lake Tahoe, Nevada last week, with more than 70 county Extension faculty from the western states in attendance. Attendees from Arizona included Janice Shelton, Cynthia Flynn, Steve Husman, Barry Bequette, Robert MacArthur, and Deborah Young. Several of Arizona's participants concluded the conference by studying the limnology of Lake Tahoe. (Ask Cynthia Flynn for the fish story.)

* At the first National 4-H Technology Conference, held July 7-12, 2000 at the University of Maryland, College Park, Curt Peters, Sheila Merrigan and two youth, Chan Jernigan from Greenlee County and Christian Castro from La Paz County, learned about the many innovative ways available to 4-H members who are using technology. This team learned new strategies for using technology for youth and community development. They engaged in an activity that outlined the history of technology use in individual's lives, in communities, and in society, which yielded information about the trends that shape the way that we use technology and those that have created a "digital divide". The team is using this information to develop the beginnings of a plan for the future use of technology with 4-H Youth Development in Arizona.

* Congratulations to Sharon Hoelscher Day and her team on a successful Safe Food 2000 conference July 26-27. In the last three years, this annual event has attracted more than 400 different food professionals. National efforts to improve consumer food handling practices have expanded in recent years. Cooperative Extension, under Sharon's leadership, has fulfilled an important educational role in Arizona.

* Learn about Yavapai County Direct Farm Markets through the 2000 Farm Fresh Web Site. Sixteen producers and one farmer^Òs market are featured in this interactive web site. Information about farms/markets can be accessed by location on a map or by name. Crops produced, hours and directions to farms, a harvest calendar, road map, and growers resources are also available. Some of the producers also take orders via E-mail and have their web sites linked. The URL is: http://cals.arizona.edu/yavapai/farmfresh/farmfresh.html. Brochures can be requested by clientele by sending a SASE to Farm Fresh, Yavapai County Cooperative Extension, P.O. Box 388, Prescott, AZ 86302.

* Mark your calendars for the Rangeland Monitoring Workshop, Saturday, August 12, 2000 at the Gila County Fairgrounds and Wheeler Ranch in Globe.
