* In the late 1800s, a French grape grower applied a blue compound (copper
sulfate and lime) to his vineyard to prevent pilfering. He found that his
crop had less downy mildew disease than his neighbors -- and the first
fungicide was discovered. Vegetable and cotton growers from central
Arizona learned about historical and new fungicides, and how they work, at
the 7th Annual Agricultural Production Short Course, hosted by Kai Umeda
and Patrick Clay at the Maricopa County Extension office. Cooperative
Extension is known and respected for great workshops such as this.
