Congratulations to Lynna Deal, Home Living Assistant in Gila County, for
receiving a grant from Wells Fargo Community Partners, a charitable giving
committee of Norwest Bank. Lynna will receive $5,000 for her "Busy Kids"
program that helps parents of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder. With these funds, Lynna will be able to purchase much needed
books and materials, bring in speakers and help needy families with
transportation costs.
* Congratulations to Tim Dennehy, Extension Specialist and Professor, who
lead a large collaboration comprised of Arizona, California, and New Mexico
scientists, for being awarded a three-year $740,000 grant entitled,
"Sustainability of Bt Cotton in the Southwest." Participants include Bruce
Tabashnik, Yves Carriere, Yong-Biao Liu, Elizabeth Willott, and George
Frisvold of the University of Arizona, Larry Antilla of the Arizona Cotton
Research & Protection Council, Jim Rudig of the California Department of
Food and Agriculture, and Joe Ellington of New Mexico State University.
The project investigates many of the critical questions surrounding
detection and management of pink bollworm resistance to genetically
modified cotton that expresses a pesticidal Bt toxin. Arizona cotton
growers are on the cutting edge of global adoption of genetically modified
crops. This funding will help to insure that Extension has the information
needed to help producers to use this valuable new technology in a
sustainable manner.

* Dr. Linda Larkey, with the Arizona Cancer Center and College of Public
Health, was inadvertently omitted from the announcement about the Bone
Builder's award from the Arizona Public Health Association. Linda is the
co-director of the program in Maricopa County. Apologies for this oversight.
* Electronic classes planned for fall and early winter. Based on the
survey responses for electronic class priorities, we have selected four of
the six topics to be given over the next several months. These are the
classes which are scheduled:
- Basic HTML, 10 week class, starting Oct 3
- Web site accessibility, 6 week class, starting Nov 1
- Introduction to Dreamweaver, 6 week class, starting Jan 8
For details about the above three classes, see
http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/classes/ and there is a link to a registration
form. If you have specific questions about the content of the three
electronic classes, send an email to ffolinda@cals.arizona.edu. These
classes are free and are open to any College faculty, staff, student, or
volunteer. There is no face-to-face component, but it does require a
minimal 1-2 hour time commitment each week. We are also planning on
giving the "Using Library Online Databases" class, sometime in early 2001.
A notice will go out later about this class. Please contact Linda
Ffolliott or Sheila Merrigan for more specific information.
