Tuesday Morning Notes

October 30th, 2001

Congratulations to the following faculty who were allocated competitive IPM funds for programs for this federal fiscal year: Pat Clay, Tom DeGomez, Peter Ellsworth, Dawn Gouge, Henry Hagedorn, Bill McCloskey, Mary Olsen, Barry Tickes, Kai Umeda (only the P.I.s are listed). Thirteen proposals were submitted, requesting over $100,000 in funding. Descriptions of their programs are on-line at http://cals.arizona.edu/internal/programs/ipm01-02.html.

* Last Friday the Ag 100 group presented Bill Scott with the 2001 Agriculturist of the Year Award. Bill is a farmer from Maricopa and Pinal counties.

* The University of Arizona Advancement Team has developed a volunteer appreciation publication honoring many different types of University-related volunteers. Because of budget cuts, this may be a one-time publication but it is also on the Advancement website which will be updated often. Two of our Master Gardeners are honored in feature stories. Take a look at the website: http://UAadvancement.arizona.edu/volunteers.

* The Cooperative Extension Staff In-Service held Friday, October 19 at the Holiday Inn Palo Verde hotel began with each county introducing their staff with a skit, rap, song, or poster presentation. Some were very educational, others very informative and even some had a "you've got to visit us" travel flavor. There were personal development workshops put on by Rosemary Carrillo, Karen Edwards and Glenda Thompson, Character Education presentations by Cindy Pearson and Lisa Lauxman, and updates on budget and personnel issues from the lead people in Purchasing, Sponsored Projects, Human Resources and CALS Administration. The closing Awards Luncheon honored seven individuals who were nominated for the 2001 Extension Staff Person of the Year award. Many positive comments were heard about the involvement of "our own folks" as workshop presenters. Thank you to Steven Crofts for a good job organizing this event." Pictures from this event, as well as from the preceding CALS Development Day, will be available in the near future on a temporary web site. Watch for future announcements.

* Graham County Cooperative Extension would like to invite you to come to a workshop "Fundamental Plant Production within Greenhouses". This seminar will feature Dr. Gene Giacomelli, Director of The Controlled Environment Agriculture Program, Dr. Pat Rorabaugh, Plant Science Instructor, and Dr. Randy Norton, Graham County Agriculture Agent. They have prepared a program to help better understand how to care for a hobby greenhouse. The workshop will be held at Safford/Graham County Public Library in the Phelps Dodge Room. There will be a limit of 65 registrations. Registration is $20.00 to cover the materials and lunch. Deadline is November 9th. For more information please call (928)428-2611 or e-mail Randy (rnorton@cals.arizona.edu).

* The Arizona 4-H Program has been selected as one of five pre-approved providers for Character Education for the NAU K-12 Center. This means that you can offer schools in your county the opportunity to team with us to qualify for the $1500 matching funds provided by the State Legislature. Any school can qualify, but they must use one of the five pre-approved providers for the teacher training. Matching funds can come from any source and can include in-kind contributions of time and services. The only thing that cannot be used as in-kind match are the services of those who are paid from the federal Character Education grant. A small workshop on how to apply for these funds as well as how to conduct training will be held in Phoenix on Thursday, November 15 from 10am - noon. Contact Bill Peterson for more details (bpeters@cals.arizona.edu).

* Despite what some of you may have heard at Staff Development Day last week, using the Purchasing Card at CALSmart is allowed. The new P-card administrator was not aware that we had cleared this with her predecessor. However, keep in mind that the online payment option (CALSmart Online) is designed primarily for use by the public. If you use a P-card here, you will be charged automatically for postage (even if you are on the Courier route), and you will be charged full retail price (even if you are eligible for a bulk discount). In most cases, it is better to call or fax an order to CALSmart when using a P-card.

* Colorado River 4-H Small Stock Show is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, January 19 & 20, 2002 in Parker. Contact Jerry Olson for details (golson@cals.arizona.edu).
