It is with great pleasure that I announce Dr. Sherry L. Betts as the 2001
Extension Faculty of the Year Award. Dr. Betts complied an outstanding and
impressive track record in the area of Community outreach: focusing on
youth development and family education since her appointment as Associate
Specialist in the Family Studies and Human Development Division offices in
1992. She has been recognized as one of the most influential and
respected individual at the local, state and national levels. Sherry has
also gained international recognition for her role in developing a
partnership between communities in Arizona and Zimbabwe for the purpose of
youth development. In addition, Dr. Betts has worked on building prevention
and early intervention youth programs that focus on various ethnic minority
families and communities in Arizona. Sherry epitomizes an "ideal" role
model in the extension area where emphasis is placed on linking and
integrating academic and outreach programs. She has successfully
synergized the mission of research, extension, and instruction by
collaborating with diverse groups of people from campus as well as at the
county and state level. Her innovation, initiative and leadership combined
with her strong research and grant writing skills and her commitment to
prevention programming for children, youth and families have resulted in
the securement of more than 10 million dollars for the development and
implementation of numerous programs.
