The Southwest Indian Agricultural Association (SWIAA) 14th Annual
Conference will take place January 15-17, 2002 at the River Palms Resort in
Laughlin, Nevada. The title of this year's conference is "Tribal Nations in
Unity: Striving Towards the Next Generation of Indian Farming and
Ranching". Seminars will include Indian Higher Education in Arizona, EIRP
Expanded and Enhanced for Tribes and Agricultural Projects Update,
AZMET...How do we use it on the Reservations and Using GIS for Resource
Enhancement. On January 17th Dr. Pat Reid, Director, Renewable Natural
Resources, will moderate a Water Marketing Seminar. This seminar is funded
by a USDA/CSREES grant through Native American Programs. It looks like a
quality program and a good opportunity to meet with clientele from around

* On October 26, the Maricopa County Nutrition in the Garden Team, Beth
Smith, Jo Miller, and Andrea Zechmann, presented, Garden Grown: Aim, Build,
Choose a seminar teaching 75 school decision makers how to use the garden
as a tool for teaching the newly revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
The morning began with a hands-on session led by Jennifer Morris who
developed the USDA nutrition and school gardening curriculum, Nutrition to
Grow On, Ms. Morris connected the curriculum to the Arizona Academic
Standards. After the general session, participants took part in a variety
of breakout sessions including a cooking demo highlighting the Guidelines
as part of a healthy meal; the ABCs to Gardening focusing on garden basics,
container gardening and worm composting sessions demonstrating two popular
school gardening techniques; and a physical fitness session spotlighting
the physical benefits of gardening. Attendees also had an opportunity to
stroll through exhibits and discover the local resources available to them.
Finally, attendees had a chance to tour the Halle Heart Center that served
as the seminar venue.
