Tuesday Morning Notes

March 13th, 2001

* Mike Schneider has indicated his intention to retire this summer. We are planning to fill his position.. Before we initiate this process, I would like to invite any faculty who would be interested in relocating to Greenlee County through our lateral move policy to let me know in writing by March 30, 2001. Our lateral move policy indicates that we would cover relocating expenses, but there would be no salary adjustment. However, if the faculty was also selected as County Director for Greenlee County, they would get a 10% administrative adjustment.

* Pat Clay, Tim Dennehy, and Jeff Silvertooth did a great job presenting at last week's 58th Annual Meeting of the Arizona Cotton Growers Association.

* Congratulations also to Monica Pastor who received the AZ Cotton Growers 2001 Industry Appreciation Award at their March 7 meeting.

* In preparation for ECAT's launch of their online ordering site this Spring, and in recognition of the college name change, they are changing the name of the Publication Distribution Center to "CALSmart." They will name the e-commerce site "CALSmart Online." This change will be beneficial to customers and allow more flexibility in marketing the college's sale publications. Thanks to Robert Casler and Roger Caldwell for these innovative ideas.

*Eddie Basha gave the Friday kick off presentation on food retailing and consumers in the 21st Century at the Arizona Association of Family and Consumer Sciences meeting on March 2. On Saturday, Dr. Tahira Hira, president-elect for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences spoke. Linda Block, Ralph Price and Sharon Hoelscher Day did workshops at the conference. Carly Berndt presented the capstone session on women's health and fitness. The U of A was well represented - Soyeon Shim received the AzAFCS 2001 University and Colleges Award, Sherry Betts received the AzAFCS 2001 Research Award, Sharon Hoelscher Day received the AzAFCS 2001 Leader Award, and Shirley Jo Taylor received the AzAFCS 2001 Hall of Fame Award. Kudos! One of the pre-conferences was on Health Indoor Air with Extension, health department and secondary teachers - contact Sharon Hoelscher Day for more information from that workshop. A special thanks goes to Dr. Shim and the School of Family and Consumer Sciences for hosting the conference.

* A wonderful celebration of agriculture took place March 3rd in Parker. Jana Ponce, a current Project CENTRL participant, completed her leadership project with an amazing event that involved the whole community in a day of appreciation and celebration of agriculture. The project was 9 months in the making and included over 25 hours of interviews with farm families that was condensed into a 50 minute video detailing the life and history of Parker Valley's agricultural families and community. A professional display titled "A Growing Place: Stories of Agriculture in the Parker Valley"was unveiled and will be available for use around the county and state. The actual event brought in a wide array of old and new farm equipment, photos, news clippings, and a variety of current farm products. Over 300 attendees from as far away as Oregon enjoyed a great pit BBQ prepared by local farm families. Support for the project included the Arizona Humanities Council, Salt River Project, Arizona Public Service and many local business donors. The Rovey family was instrumental in developing the video and bringing in some of the old farm equipment from Glendale. This was also the first University of Arizona Alumni event in La Paz County and had great participation by the College and Project CENTRL. Many thanks to Jana Ponce, Albert Rovey, Janice Shelton, Woodie & Janet Winans, Rosario Hurtado, and a large group of volunteers who assisted with the project and made it a very successful grass roots community effort. For more information about the display or video, contact Janice Shelton at 520-669-9843.
