Tuesday Morning Notes

March 20th, 2001

* Our county faculty peer review committee is on campus today. Our "APROL" reporting seems to have facilitated this process, though access to APROL in more rural counties is still a challenge. We continue to work to improve and simplify the reporting system. I appreciate the time, effort and integrity that these faculty are putting into the process.

* I look forward to seeing many of you at the CYFAR meetings in San Diego later this week. Several of our faculty are presenting papers and receiving recognition.

* Congratulations to Dr. Dawn Gouge, Extension Entomology Specialist, for receiving an award from the Environmental Protection Agency. Dawn, Paul Baker, Kirk Smith, and Carl Olson, with the support of Department Head Bruce Tabashnik, implemented an integrated pest management program in several schools in Tempe. The use of pesticides was reduced by 80%; the reported incidence of arthropod pests in schools was also reduced significantly. Dr. Marc Lame, School of Environmental Affairs, Indiana University, traveled to Arizona to present the award.

* As a requirement of the new 2001-2004 Civil Rights Performance Plan submitted to CSREES in Washington D.C. Shirley O'Brien has begun a new round of off-campus Civil Rights Reviews. Last week, she visited Prescott and Cottonwood in Yavapai County, Holbrook in Navajo County and Flagstaff in Coconino County. The Civil Rights Responsibility Checklist for Compliance (Addendum B) is the basis for each review which includes demographic data, documentation on Advisory Boards, AAP 5 form data, potential recipients vs. actual face-to-face contacts by race and gender and percent of clientele reached last year. One of the most important aspects is assessment of facilities based on the Americans With Disabilities act (ADA) requirements. Each unit is required to have a central Civil Rights file where these documents are located. On the first of March, all units were sent a copy of this new plan. If you need more information prior to your upcoming review, please contact Shirley.

* Five Arizona Cooperative Extension faculty were selected as interns in the first Western Extension Leadership (WELD) class. Thirty-five interns were selected from the western region. Joyce Alves, Steve Husman, Sharon Hoelscher Day, Barry Bequette, and Juanita O'Campo Waits participated in the first conference last week in San Diego. During the next 15 months, interns will develop an innovative project to address their leadership journey. For more information contact one of the interns or Deborah Young, chair, WELD committee.
