Reminder to all CED's and faculty: Evaluations should be completed by May
15, 2001.
* Dr. Roy Ax has elected to step down after eleven years of strong service
as head of the Department of Animal Sciences. Effective, Monday April 30,
2001, Dr. Bob Collier took over the responsibilities as interim head of the
department. Dr. Collier joined our faculty in 1999 after a distinguished
career with Monsanto. We are fortunate that he is willing to assume these
responsibilities on such short notice.

* Project CENTRL (Center for Rural Leadership) is actively recruiting and I
would encourage and recommend faculty and CED's to identify motivated rural
leaders from throughout Arizona for selection into Class XVI. The deadline
for applications for the start of the next class is Friday, June 1st.
Interviews and selection of 30 class members will take place in late summer
with the first seminar of the two-year program scheduled in October. Please
contact Karen Vanderheyden at (520) 316-0909 or e-mail at
kvander@cals.arizona.edu to receive an application packet or to forward names
of potential candidates.
* Family Odyssey 2001, A Social Development Conference, sponsored by
Cooperative Extension's Building Strong Families Task Force, will be held
May 31, 2001 at Amphi High School in Tucson. The purpose is to update
family professionals in recent research regarding social development across
the lifespan. In addition, a training will be held Friday, June 1 using the
Moving Ahead: Adolescent Growth and Development curriculum. Contact Carol
Willis 520/428-2611, cwillis@cals.arizona.edu
* Mohave County Cooperative Extension sponsored a Bone Builders Health Fair
at the Del E. Webb Wellness Center in Kingman on Saturday, April 21. The
event was well attended considering the weather system (including snow!)
that visited the area that day. Approximately 150 attended the fair, 110 of
which received bone scans to learn their T-score risk for osteoporosis.
Sharon Hoelscher Day was a keynote speaker for the day, and local agencies
provided education and service booths.
* On April 28, over 100 College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Retirees
gathered for an evening of BBQ beef, laughter and conversation. The Fifth
Annual CALS Retirees took place at the El Rio Neighborhood Center with a
program update from the Dean and the Director of Extension. John Marchello
catered the main dish but there were dozens of salads and desserts to
complement his "signature BBQ beef". There was a retiree planning committee
but the major organization of the event was managed by Patti Baciewicz and
Carol Knowles with help from Shirley O'Brien and Nancy Graham, who provided
beautiful red and blue decorations. Dr. Pete Dewhirst was the MC for the
evening. The highlight for everyone was David Fitzsimmons, Arizona Daily
Star Political Cartoonist and stand up comic, who drew caricatures of Dean
Sander, Howard and Barbara Jones, Frank Whiting, Ken Foster and Jim O'Brien
(Fitz's music professor 23 years ago). This event has become an annual
tribute to faculty and staff who have given many years service to CALS and
look forward each year to meeting their colleagues and sharing their memories.
