June 26th, 2001

Joe Hiller has been appointed Assistant Dean for Native American Programs in addition to his present title of Assistant Director of Cooperative Extension for Native American Programs. His split will remain 70% Extension, 30% academic programs. He will represent CALS and the University of Arizona on national-level issues of importance to Native Americans and higher education. Congratulations, Joe!

* We welcome Eric Norton who has accepted the position of Assistant Area Agent, Agriculture (LaPaz and Mohave Counties) as of July 30, 2001. Eric received his M.S. in Soil, Water, and Environmental Science from the University of Arizona and is looking forward to relocating back to Arizona from Sacramento, CA. (And, yes, he is Randy Norton's brother! (Graham County))

* Many faculty and staff have benefitted from tuition reductions for their kids. I know I have saved a few dollars. You might want to check out the website www.hr.arizona.edu/formspage.htm for the revised Qualified Tuition Reduction forms.

* Services for Dean Emeritus Darrell S. Metcalfe were held last Friday, June 22, 2001. Over a hundred people attended his service. Dean Metcalfe is remembered for his dedication to students and his contributions to college administration and international programs during a time of major growth and technological development in the College of Agriculture. He served as associate dean and director of resident instruction from 1958 to his retirement at age 69 in 1982. He also served as acting director of Cooperative Extension in 1978 and 1979, and as dean of the College of Agriculture from 1978 to 1980.

* Steve Campbell and his colleagues County conducted an Arborist training in Show Low June 11-16. Participants had the opportunity to take the ISA Certification Exam. Eight chose to do so. Four certified and seven passed. Others are scheduled to test in Tucson or Flagstaff in the near future. A special thanks goes out to Chris Jones, Ursula Schuch, Lucy Bradley and Tom DeGomez for providing quality instruction for the class. In addition, several Certified Arborists from the private sector provided blocks of instruction that were critical the success of this training.

* Navajo County has received $121,200 for a fuel reduction program in Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside over the next two years. This project is funded by State/Private Forestry monies passed through Arizona State Land Department. The cooperating communities and Navajo County are matching the salary funds for a year-to-year Assistant Extension Agent to conduct this program. The total value of this effort over two years will be $332,200. Congratulations!

* A meeting of all agents and specialists with activities or interests in forage and grain crops will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2001, 10-2 at Maricopa Ag Center. Contact: Mike Ottman, 621-7186, mottman@cals.arizona.edu

* Discounted pricing with moving companies is available for all employees at the University of Arizona for interstate personal moves. Discounts offered range from 53% to 61% on packing and transportation with guaranteed pick up and delivery dates. Contact Procurement and Contracting Services (Purchasing) for more information.

* Remember there will be no Tuesday Morning notes for July 3, 2001. I will be out of state on vacation partying that week.
