Tuesday Morning Notes

June 6th, 2001

In addition to my role as Director for Cooperative Extension and Associate Dean in CALS, I also am assuming the role of Interim Head of the Department of Agriculture and Resource Economics until a new head is selected.

* A few days ago information on the human subjects self-test was sent to 4-H Agents in county and reservation offices. If you are interested in viewing a copy, please contact the agent in your county. If you are taking the test, be sure to send the test, and the form directly to: Vice President for Research, Attn: Linda Nultemeier, Administration Bldg. Room # 601, University of Arizona, P.O. Box 210066, Tucson, AZ 85721-0066. You can ignore the evaluation forms in the back of the book.

* Dr. Paul Brown was honored with the "Faculty of the Year Award" at the Ag 100 Council meeting June 1, 2001. He also received a check with the award. Paul established and maintains the AZMET system throughout the state, and also developed the Extension education program. Congratulations, Paul!

* My thanks go out to the coordinators for the CED and CALS Annual Administrative Retreat meetings in Flagstaff, June 3-5: Stan Farlin, Ken Foster, Debby Janes, Dean Sander, Soyeon Shim, Jeff Silvertooth, Bruce Tabashnik, and Deborah Young.

* Please RSVP by Wednesday June 6 (that's tomorrow!) if you plan to attend the AAEA meeting in Payson, June 13-15! Contact Lee Clark: leeclark@cals.arizona.edu or 520-428-2432. Registration is $30. Reservations should be made with the Inn of Payson, 1-800-247-9477. Ag Education Professor Dr. James Knight will head up a morning workshop on presenting controversial issues to our clientele, a fine line we all get to walk. The BBQ ($15 at the door) will include the Woodie Winans class dinner. On Friday, there will be a tour to Young, including touring the Tonto Fish Hatchery (bring your kids and trout lines for some easy fishing). The tour to Young includes some of the best scenery in Arizona, more steak, and perhaps a chance encounter with Robert Fisher (email ckjones@cals.arizona.edu for the agenda).

* Robert Greenberg (aka "Bob") and his spouse, Jiang Ying, return to the UA campus on Monday, July 2 as guest lecturers through the Office of Summer Session Distinguished Lecturer/Multicultural Series. Bob will give a multimedia presentation titled "The USDA/Army School-Age and Teen Project" (ASA&T) in the Marley Auditorium (Room 230) from 2:00-3:30 with a reception following. Bob has played a key role in bringing Army youth online. For the last three years he has worked as a computer technical specialist with the project which is a joint effort by the U.S. Army Community Family Support Center and USDA-CSREES. He has established Internet access to several ASA&T computer labs at remote installations in Hawaii, Alaska, Korea and Japan, provided technical assistance to Army staff working with youth ages 6-18, and reviewed and recommended 4-H/Extension programs for Army implementation. These experiences and more will be the subject of his lecture. For those who cannot attend in person, the presentation will be webcast and be available live and archived for later viewing. More information will be available closer to the presentation date.
