Tuesday Morning Notes

August 21st, 2001

Anthony Chavez, candidate for Assistant/Associate Agent, 4-H Youth Development, Maricopa County will be on campus interviewing on Thursday, August 30. His seminar, "My Vision For 4-H Programs in Maricopa County in 2005" will be webcast live at http://cals.arizona.edu/extension/webcasts.html.

* Plans are being made for an "Annual Performance Report - Writing with Impacts" workshop on Wednesday, December 12, 10-3, on campus. Please hold this date - further details are forthcoming.

* Many of us have family members or personally deal with health issues. This year in the State Government, health plans with CIGNA have some major changes. Check them over carefully. It is particularly important to look carefully at the "Transition of Care" for anyone or a family member with chronic illness and are on an HMO. It is less of an issue for those on a PPO. Don't assume that treatments for pre-existing conditions will continue. You may have to complete extra paperwork and documentation related to the "Transition of Care" issue. Contact CIGNA Member Services at 1-800-613- 4563 for more information.

* Shirley O'Brien will be conducting the annual sabbatic leave conference call which has been set for Thursday, September 13 at 1:00pm. If you are interested in becoming a candidate for sabbatical leave in 2002, you will want to be "on-line" for this discussion. The purpose of the call is to offer suggestions for successful submissions, to discuss the requirements for eligibility, and to share information on any new policies. Contact Steven Crofts at 621-7145 or scrofts@cals.arizona.edu to sign up for the call. Teleconference dial-in information and an agenda will be sent out to participants prior to the call.

* Coming Attraction!! Look for CALS 3rd Annual Shirt Order offer. Be sure to check CALS Weekly Bulletin and Tuesday Morning Notes for ordering details.

* Mark your calendars for the Arizona Highlands Garden Conference, planned and presented by the UA Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners from Coconino, Gila, and Yavapai counties. The conference offers indoor and outdoor presentations on a variety of topics related to high elevation gardening and landscaping. The conference will be held October 8-9, 2001 at the Chapel Rock Conference Center in Prescott. Contact Jeff Schalau 520/445-6590, jschalau@cals.arizona.edu or visit the conference web site at: cals.arizona.edu/yavapai/ahgc/conference2001.html

* CALS and Cooperative Extension pocket folders are available to employees and come in two formats. They are available for 40 cents each (less than the UA folders at 43 cents) from CALSmart (318-7275). They will be useful for distributing materials to students and visitors and in conjunction with programs and presentations.

* New mini-courses being held at MAC: This applied sciences curriculum is specifically designed and tailored for anyone interested in learning more about a specific area and upgrading their skills and understanding. Each course, which meets once a week for a month, is conveniently offered to both undergraduate and graduate students, working professions, such as PCAs and PCOs, crop consultants, agricultural industry personnel, Master Gardeners, and others. The first course is Soils and Soil Fertility, taught by Jeff Silvertooth, Jim Walworth, Tom Thompson, and Paul Brown. Future courses are Agricultural IPM, by Peter Ellsworth; Diagnosis and Control of Plant Diseases, by Mary Olsen; and Urban IPM, by Dawn Gouge and Kirk Smith. More information can be found at http://cals.arizona.edu/crops/public/education/01CIAbrochurev2.pdf or call Academic Programs at 621- 3613.

Since some of these sessions will be open to the entire campus, if you are interested, you should register as soon as possible by going to http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/classes/register.html
