Tuesday Morning Notes

January 8th, 2002

Happy 2002! Welcome back. I know the backlog of work never seems to go away, but I do hope you had some special time with family and friends over the holidays. I'm looking forward to visiting with each of you during the Spring county visits.

* The first APR for 2001 was completed using APROL on Friday, January 4, 2001. Reminder that all APRs are due no later than February 1.

* Gordon Johnson, Associate Dean for Administration in CALS, is retiring effective January 31 after fourteen years of service to the college and the University of Arizona. Please join us on Thursday, January 24 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the Forbes lobby for refreshments and a pictorial/musical review of Gordy's life from the early years through the present retirement event as we wish Gordy well in his future endeavors. If you are able to attend, please contact Jennifer Smith in the Dean's Office at 621-7621 or by e-mail at jsmith@cals.arizona.edu by January 18. Any notes, cards, and well wishes for Gordy may also be sent to Jennifer in the Forbes Building, Room 306.

* We welcome Evelyn Markee who started January 4th as the Family and Consumer Sciences/Community Health Programs Assistant Agent in Cochise County, Sierra Vista office. Evelyn will be responsible for programs focusing on the strengthening of families, parenting, life skills, health promotion/disease prevention/food safety, and the Family and Community Education program. She received her M.S. in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University.

* We also welcome Lynne Borden as Associate Specialist, 4-H Youth Development in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. Lynne joined us on January 7, 2002. Lynne can be reached at 520/621-1063 or via e-mail at bordenl@cals.arizona.edu.

* Colin and I went to the Department of Agriculture meeting on the specialty crop dollars. Bill McCloskey and Glenn Wright were also there. The RFPs are on line at http://agriculture.state.az.us/grantfunds.htm. Arizona got $3.43 million of which the department is holding back one million. In the following, we wanted to highlight some of the things said at the meetings that may not appear in the RFPs. At this time we do not have information on whether indirect costs will be considered. No matching funding is required, but the department is looking to see if they can leverage dollars. So they are looking for some cash match. The proposals must deal with EXISTING (the definition of this is a bit vague) specialty crops; no cattle, no dairy, no new crops. The education monies are targeted at K through 12, not adult ag literacy. Capital equipment can be included in the proposals if justified. Proposals should have performance measures. Format is crucial. Five copies must be in the hands of Department of Ag by February 4, no exceptions. Proposals must be on white paper, clipped not stapled or bound, with the name of the investigator on each page. Proposal needs to be directed at one of the four categories--multiple category grants will not be considered unless they are submitted separately. They want to implement a cancelled check procedure in the dispersal of monies, along with quarterly reports. We will be working to get them to lighten up on some of this. If you want more information give Colin, Bill, Glenn or myself a call. And remember that all applications must go through the normal College and UofA routing process prior to being sent off to ADOA, so be sure to allow time for that, and to include any additional forms required by the College or University (for example, the Proposal Routing Sheet or CALS Cost Sharing/Matching Worksheet) in the packet you route through the University.

* ECAT is sponsoring various classes and talks related to Dreamweaver, a popular program used to create web sites. In a recent survey of college persons, this program came out as the most commonly used program for web site creation. These classes are open to CALS employees, students and volunteers and there is no charge. 1) Jan 18, Fri, 1-2, in Forbes 124 General demonstration of basic features in Dreamweaver 4.0. 2) Jan 29-March 5, electronic class with lessons posted once a week; 6 lessons total, with an option to earn a certificate after completing weekly lessons and a small web site as a class project. Basics in using Dreamweaver 4.0 will be covered, including site definitions, font sizes and colors and styles, bulleted and numbered lists, using graphics on your page, links, and tables. 3) Feb 12, two sessions from Macromedia: 10 am session on campus on "Tricks and Tips in using Dreamweaver 4.0" and 1 pm session on campus on "Dreamweaver UltraDev". Both of these are aimed at more experienced users. These sessions will be opened to the campus soon, and will fill up quickly. For details, see http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/classes/ which also has a link to the registration form.

*Mark your calendars for the 2002 Annual Faculty Conference to be held August 27-29, 2002 at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort and Spa.
