Tuesday Morning Notes

June 25, 2002

A memorial service was held on Monday, June 24, 2002. in memory of Jim Williams, former Extension Agent, Specialist and Administrator who passed away at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2002 after a long fight with cancer. Our heartfelt prayers and thoughts are with his wife, Betty. If you wish to contact Betty, her address is 1723 Sun Ridge Dr., Tucson, AZ 85737 and her phone number is (520) 229-1623.

JOLT, a Cooperative Extension teen leadership program, now in its 15th year, will be remembered by "an eerie red glow of the sun through the smoke clouds, an all-night evacuation planning session and a 30-minute evacuation notice of over 100 kids and adults." There were many "Extension Heroes" involved in this team effort. However, Dean Fish, Gerry Olson, Bryan Chadd and Mike Hauser collaborated on this write-up and Gerry Olson captured some pictures of the evacuation. Also, Char Keams sent down some of the earliest photos of the Rodeo fire from Navajo County taken Wednesday night, just 24 hours after it began. These pictures and the JOLT evacuation experience can to seen at: http://cals.arizona.edu/extension/joltevacuation

Congratulations to the 2002 Western Extension Leadership Development (WELD) class, which graduated June 21, 2002. Part of the WELD program's purpose is to generate an assortment of scholarly Extension projects that collectively illustrate institutional and individual benefits of enhanced leadership skills. Five Arizona interns completed their training and projects. Barry Bequette worked with other County Extension Directors (CED's) to evaluate operational policies and procedures by providing a tool (report) CED's can use to evaluate and analyze options for utilization of resources. Joyce Alves, in collaboration with the Charting Community Connections process and the Institute of Cultural Affairs, developed a plan for character education in the Round Valley Community. Steve Husman worked with other Arizona extension faculty to enhance a county-based field crops partnership model to address statewide issues in a focused and comprehensive manner. Juanita O'Campo Waits worked with the Southeast Valley Neighborhood College to form the Leadership Center and empower community residents through leadership development & education. Sharon Hoelscher Day developed a project to build stronger ties between county, campus and community food safety professionals.

We are pleased to announce that the latest Cooperative Extension publication "A Bridge Across the State" won Second Place in the NAADA 2002 Publication and Project Competition that took place in Park City, Utah, June 15-19. The National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association holds an annual conference and solicits entries for various competitions as a means of recognizing excellence among the land-grant colleges throughout the country. The judging criteria are stringent, which makes this award especially rewarding for our College. Congratulations to all involved!

Congratulations to Joanne Littlefield for winning first place at the National Federation of Press Women, May 3, 2002. She presented "Special articles agriculture, agribusiness, aquaculture," and Joanne will go in September to compete at the national level at the group's annual NFPW Communication Contest conference.

The Santa Cruz County office is still receiving mail late due to incorrect addresses being used. In some cases, mail is being sent to their old Congress address and in others, instead of Grand Avenue, Grant Avenue is being used and some end up in Tucson. Please check all mailing lists and directories and use: 3241 N. Grand Avenue, Suite 6, Nogales, AZ, 85621-3917.
