Tuesday Morning Notes

July 2, 2002

* We are very pleased to announce that Elizabeth Didier from Logan, Utah has accepted the Assistant Agent, Agriculture/Natural Resources and 4-H Youth Development, Hualapai/Havasupai Indian Tribes in Mohave County. Her start date will be August 5, 2002.

* My sincere congratulations go to Steve Campbell, the faculty and staff of Navajo County whose cooperation and efforts with the fire reflect very well on the College and Cooperative Extension. Prior work by Steve and his colleagues on forest issues were cited in the national news. We thank Lynne Borden for her quick response in preparing packets for each of the 15 counties on Family and Youth issues that evolve because of such crisis like the fire. In all, a good effort by a lot of good people.

* Congratulations to the Community Health Advancement Partnerships Team! Team members include: Linda Larkey, Sharon Hoelscher-Day, Vickie Steinfelt, Ralph Renger, Linda Block, Robin Harris, Marilynn Johnson, Joel Meister, Linda Houtkouper and Stuart Cohen. We have been selected as the Western Regional winner of the 2002 National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Awards Program for the Florence Hall Award! The presentation will be given at annual conference regional meeting brunch on October 6 in Kansas City. Please notify Marilynn Johnson jmarilyn@cals.arizona.edu by July 15 if you will be attending the awards presentation.

* Congratulations to Maria-del-Carmen Aranguren, graphic designer; Robert Armstrong, database development; and Andrea Zechman, coordinator, for their contributions with the NACAA Website Award.

* Congratulations to Cathy Cromell, Editor of Arizona Master Gardener Press; Cathy Rymer and Terry Mikel, who each co-authored a chapter; and the Maricopa County Master Gardeners for their efforts with the Learning Module Award.

* WATCHING A DEMO CLASS WHILE IN YOUR OFFICE: ECAT is experimenting with different ways to provide training and classes other than a face-to-face mode, and will be offering four classes this summer using a web-conferencing system from the University of Illinois. The class topics and dates are: An Overview to Dreamweaver 4.0, July 17, 10-11:30; Web Basics in Photoshop 6, July 31, 9-10:15; Web Basics in Fireworks 4, August 8, 9-10:15; Using the Rotating Script on the AgServer, August 13, 1-2:15. What is different about these classes is that you take them while in your office, using a phone (a conference phone call) so you can hear and ask questions, and AT THE SAME TIME use the browser on your computer to connect to a special website which will let you see the instructor's computer screen. The cost of the system is $13 per hour. Following a class each participant will be billed for the number of minutes the class lasted. More details about the coverage of each class and its prerequisites are at http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/classes/. There is also a link on this page for the registration form. If you are interested in taking a class using this system, but the dates are not good for you, send a private email to ffolinda@cals.arizona.edu.

The recent, two-day Bone Builders volunteer training was held in three sites simultaneously using the UA Health Sciences videoconferencing system in Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Special thanks to Extension faculty involved in the training - Sharon Hoelscher Day, Linda Block, Lynne Durrant, Marilynn Johnson; Bone Builders staff - Eva Paz-Ono, Liz Scholl, Diane Katz, Miriam Nichols; and Bone Builders volunteer, Christine Henry, with the Flagstaff Medical Center who worked with 43 new volunteers or staff. Outside speakers included Dr. Jeff Lisse, UA Arthritis Center; Vanessa Standford and Dr. Scott Going, UA Dept. of Nutritional Sciences; and Dr. Tim Lohman, UA Dept. of Physiology. The new volunteers represented seven counties.

Sherry Betts, Karen Tepper, Dan McDonald, James Roebuck and Roshni Menon in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences are pleased to announce the launch of the Building Partnerships for Youth web site! The web site, developed in partnership with National 4-H Council and The University of California-Davis, can be located at http://www.bpy.n4h.org/. It provides professionals with a database of youth development program options to help youth ages 9-13 develop the motivation to make healthy choices and thus delay the onset of sexual intercourse. Detailed information is provided for each program listed on the site. Additionally the Building Partnerships for Youth web site provides other resources relating to positive youth development and an opportunity to interact with colleagues across the country. We invite you to please visit us often at http://www.bpy.n4h.org/ as we are constantly updating our site.
