Tuesday Morning Notes

July 16, 2002

I am currently meeting with the Western Rural Development Leadership Board, the Western Region Program Leadership Committee, and the Mid Managers for the Western Regional Joint Summer meetings. We hope these multi-state efforts will bring new resources and develop new partnerships for our programs.

Please note: The Apache County Cooperative Extension office has moved to: 845 W. 4th North, St. Johns, Arizona, 85936. Their phone and fax numbers are all the same: (928) 337-2267, FAX (928) 337-2276.

Russell Tronstad, Jim Sprinkle and George Ruyle have provided me with the last free printed copy of the "Arizona Ranchers" Management Guide and a brochure on the Arizona Ranch to Rail program. Some articles in the update supercede previously published articles on a similar topic, while others address issues that were not previously covered. This is an excellent guide and I commend the authors. Future updates will be on the web at: http://cals.arizona.edu/arec/wemc/TodaysCattlePub.html.

*WATCHING A DEMO CLASS WHILE IN YOUR OFFICE: ECAT is experimenting with different ways to provide training and classes other than a face-to-face mode, and will be offering four classes this summer using a web-conferencing system from the University of Illinois. The class topics and dates are: An Overview to Dreamweaver 4.0, July 17, 10-11:30; Web Basics in Photoshop 6, July 31, 9-10:15; Web Basics in Fireworks 4, August 8, 9-10:15; Using the Rotating Script on the AgServer, August 13, 1-2:15. What is different about these classes is that you take them while in your office, using a phone (a conference phone call) so you can hear and ask questions, and AT THE SAME TIME use the browser on your computer to connect to a special website which will let you see the instructor's computer screen. The cost of the system is $13 per hour. Following a class each participant will be billed for the number of minutes they were on the call. More details about the coverage of each class and its prerequisites are at http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/classes/. There is also a link on this page for the registration form. If you are interested in taking a class using this system, but the dates are not good for you, send a private email to ffolinda@cals.arizona.edu.

*Special Seminar - "Some Basic Considerations for Greenhouse Crop Yields," Wednesday, July 17 3:30- 4:30, CEA Building Classroom, C.A.C. Roger Rd. and Campbell Avenue, Dr. Merle Jensen, University of Arizona, Plant Sciences. TOPIC: Environmental and cultural practices will be discussed that influence food crop yields in controlled environments.
